Batman Vs. Bane TPB [1993] by Chuck Dixon


BATMAN VS. BANE TRADE PAPERBACK
Bane originated as the villain in Batman: Knightfall back in 1993 in Batman: Vengeance of Bane. Writer Chuck Dixon tackled the character as the polar opposite of Bruce Wayne. Orphaned as a child and carrying out his father’s sentence in prison. Later the warden of the prison sentenced Bane to ten years of solitary confinement. Bane volunteered for the Venom experiments which augmented his strength and made him virtually unstoppable. After escaping from prison, Bane heads towards Gotham to take on its protector Batman. His first appearance led to his next in Batman #489 leading up to Batman #500 where Bane was defeated by Jean Paul Valley after he assumed the role of Batman. The design of the Batman costume now referred to as Azbats was created by Joe Quesada the current Chief Creative Officer at Marvel Comics.

Batman: Bane of the Demon follows Bane back to his birth place of Santa Prisca an island in the Caribbean. Bane searches for his real father leading him to the Order of St. Dumas which was responsible for Azrael. His search crosses path with Talia the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul. Bane is taken to meet Ra’s al Ghul who sends both his daughter and Bane on a mission to recover a sacred text from Kobra. However Ra’s al Ghul imprisons him forever in a prison cell.

Bane frees himself from his prison, defeats Ubu, and fights Ra’s al Ghul. Bane is defeated however Ra’s al Ghul lets him live because he memorized the missing scared texts. Impressed Ra’s al Ghul believes he is the perfect mate for his daughter Talia and Bane takes Ubu place. The short series served as a prequel to Batman: Legacy where Batman deals with both Ra’s al Ghul and Bane. The following sequels to Batman: Legacy lead to Batman: Cataclysm and Batman: No Man’s Land.
