Devil Comics Review | Deadpool [2016]

Following last year’s disastrous Fantastic Four, Fox Studios are more focused on their X-Men franchises by releasing Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse in the same year. Deadpool debuted in New Mutants #98 in 1991 where he was hired to hunt down the mutant Cable. Co-creators Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza wanted to create a bounty hunter similar to Boba Fett to hunt down Cable who is their Han Solo. Liefeld came up with was a Spider-Man and Deathstroke costume. Deadpool’s first name Wade came within X-Force #11 while his last name Wilson came in the first Deadpool mini-series due to an in-joke between the co-creators because of Liefeld’s love of the New Teen Titans by George Perez.

Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall in comics and he does the same within the film. In the film Wade Wilson discovers he has cancer and decides to enter into a program to cure it. The cure is worse than the disease as Wilson’s mutant gene is activated and he has a skin condition due to the treatment. Now Wilson wants to become normal and hunts down the people responsible as Deadpool.

The film is a love letter to the fans of Deadpool by giving us the violent movie we wanted and staying true to the character. It is also a lesson to studios to have faith in the characters who have a long-standing history with fans. Too bad this lesson was not taken during Fox Studios Fantastic Four film.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – 5 OUT OF 5

Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars [2015] Cullen Bunn | Matteo Lolli | Jacopo Camagni

Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #1 begins with the 1984 series as Deadpool is inserted into the events of the story. The heroes and villains battle it out as we flash forward towards the end where Doom destroys the heroes in issue eleven of the original Secret Wars. Wade Wilson heals with a new skin and mustache. The memories of reliving the first Secret Wars will bring me back to this series. The second issue focuses on the events of issues three and four of the original Secret Wars where Spider-Man takes on the X-Men and a mountain crashes on our heroes. With this version we see Spider-Man take on Deadpool who finds the shields which were only available with the action figures. Deadpool also saves our heroes under the mountain by continuously making the Hulk angry. The Deadpool shield forecasts a loss for one of Deadpool’s allies on Battleworld.

The third issue covers the original Secret Wars event between issues five and eleven. It covers the heroe’s battle with Galactus, Deadpool messing around with the Spider-Man’s black costume which eventually becomes Venom, and Doctor Doom absorbing the powers of the Beyonder. We also get a glimpse of how the heroes are coming back alive as Deadpool sacrifices himself for the sake of the Marvel heroes. Writer Cullen Bunn researched the original Secret Wars series and how Deadpool would have been incorporated with terrific results. Definite writer worth watching!

The finale sees Deadpool temporary gaining the powers of the Beyonder and saving our heroes including his love. Overall the story is fun for fans of the original 1984 series.

E98: A-Force #1 | Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars #1 | Ultimate End #1 [Devil Comics Entertainment]

A-Force #1 starts on Battleworld during the events of Secret Wars inside the Hall of Justice where She-Hulk commands an army of female Marvel heroes. A prehistoric creature attacks the city and Ms. America throws it outside the borders which are forbidden by Doom. She is sentence to the prison of SHIELD as She-Hulk summons the Sub-mariners to discover why the creature attacked their domain. The issue is short on story and very little development on plot as a new character is introduced on the final page which doesn’t warrant any further reading of this series with wonderful art which is wasted on poor story structure.

In the first issue of the Ultimate End, Doom constructed Battleworld in Secret Wars however cannot listen to the silent chambers of the Manhattan where the heroes of both the Marvel and Ultimate Universe decide however to return things to normal. However the Thors who act as Doom’s Stormtroopers arrive in Manhattan.
