Devil Comics Review | Dark Nights [2017] Metal

Writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo bring their Batman run to a peak building upon their previous run on the series. Mysterious metals were hinted throughout the series and now the source seems to have come from the Dark Multiverse. Snyder has told us that Metal is the opposite of Rebirth, which was built on the Legacy of characters. Metal is the introduction of something new and mysterious that has always been lurking throughout the DC Universe.

Metal begins when Challengers Mountain pops up in Gotham City and the Justice League investigate and discover there is a full scale invasion from the Dark Multiverse. Batman decides to use baby Darkseid to stop the invasion however he was lured into a trap to open a portal to the Dark Multiverse by the Court of Owls. Now the Dark Knights lead by Barbatos are unleashed on Earth and Batman is lost in the Dark Multiverse.

Superman is taken to the Oblivion Bar where he meets the Justice League members, Detective Chimp, Mr. Terrific, and Deathstroke. They divide themselves into four teams to stop the Batmen and Barbatos using Nth Metal. Wonder Woman, Doctor Fate and Kendra travel to the Rock of Eternity to search for Hawkman's mace. Aquaman and Deathstroke travel to Atlantis to find hidden Nth Metal while Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, and Plastic Man seek Nth Metal on Thanagar Prime. Superman uses the Anti-Monitor antenna to travel through the Phantom Zone to get to the Dark Multiverse. However Superman discovers it was a trapped and Barbatos needed his body to replace Batman so he can power the battery to complete the circuit so more nightmares can enter Earth.

At the Rock of Eternity the Wonder Woman team faces the avatars of the seven deadly sins. On Thanagar Prime, Green Lantern team deals with the new ruler of Thanagar, Onimar Synn and Starro the Conqueror. Superman and Batman is rescued by Daniel who explains Barbatos wants the Multiverse to sink into darkness. They travel to the Forge of Worlds where they meet the Dragon of Barbatos, Hawkman. Back at the Rock of Eternity, Kendra becomes Lady Blackhawk as Black Adam arrives and reveals he and Vandal Savage made a deal with Barbatos. The finale of Metal leads to more stories including the upcoming NO JUSTICE mini-series leading to the new Justice League series. Overall the story had a great start but falls flat as the excitement is carried over with other upcoming issues.

Devil Comics Review | Doomsday Clock [2018] Geoff Johns | Gary Frank

Doomsday Clock begins by showing us a world after the events of Watchmen where the ruse of an alien invasion is exposed and the world descends into chaos. Rorschach releases Erika Manson AKA the Marionette and offers to find her son in exchange for doing a job along with Marcos Maez AKA the Mime. He takes them to Nite Owl’s underground base where they meet Ozymandias who has cancer. Both the Marionette and Mime’s crime spree ended when Dr. Manhattan stopped them. Together they travel to the DC Universe to find Dr. Manhattan.

Rorschach and Veidt explore a library in Gotham City and find two people who can help them find Dr. Manhattan: Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne, Veidt goes to Lex Luthor and Rorschach goes to Bruce Wayne. Currently Lex Luthor is attempting to seize Wayne Enterprises from Bruce Wayne. While visiting Lex Luthor, Veidt encounters the Comedian while Batman meets Rorschach.

Doomsday Clock introduces the Supermen Theory which is the highest concentration of Metahumans in the United States leaving the world unbalanced. This concept is mirroring the events of Watchmen where that world is on the tipping point. This is connected to the rivalry between Lex Corp and Wayne Enterprises over the metagene. The increasing number of Metahumans could have been partially created by Dr. Manhattan.
