Avengers & X-Men: Axis HC [2014] by Rick Remender | Adam Kubert | Leinil Francis Yu

AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS HC by Rick Remender
Following the events of Uncanny Avengers, the Red Skull uses the mind of Charles Xavier to become Red Onslaught and inciting a World War Hate on humanity. Artists on the series include Andy Kubert, Leinil Francis Yu, Terry Dodson, and Jim Cheung. The Avengers & X-Men: Axis closely follows Original Sin by Jason Aaron while writer Jonathan Hickman prepares for the Time Runs Out event in May just in time for the Avengers: Age of Ultron film by Marvel Studios.

In Uncanny Avengers #25 Magneto kills the Red Skull and irrelevantly unleashes the Red Onslaught. Now the Red Skull uses his new powers of the Red Onslaught to unleash World War Hate in Avengers & X-Men: Axis #1. On Genosha Magneto, the Scarlet Witch, Havok, and Rogue fight against the Red Onslaught. Rogue takes on Red Onslaught and discovers a small piece of Charles Xavier which she uses to protect herself and the Scarlet Witch. The Avengers and the X-Men arrive to take on the Red Onslaught however he unleashes two Adamantium Stark Sentinels programed by Tony Stark to destroy them all.

The second issue of Avengers & X-Men: Axis begins as Red Onslaught unleashed two Adamantium Stark Sentinels against the combined forces of Avengers and X-Men. Each of the Avengers and X-Men fall before the Sentinels while Magneto retreats from the scene.  A final assault against Red Onslaught leaves Iron Man facing the villain alone until Magneto returns with his army of villains. Magneto #11 reveals how he manages to bring the villains together. The Stark Sentinels are programmed to destroy anyone with heroic intentions. Magneto unites Sabretooth, Mystique, Carnage, Absorbing Man, Hobgoblin, Dr. Doom, Loki, the Enchantress, Deadpool, and Jack O’Lantern against the Red Onslaught.

Following the conclusion of last issue, Magneto and his villains take on the Red Onslaught in Avengers & X-Men: Axis #3. Deadpool manages to recharge Iron Man as the Scarlet Witch uses her powers of Chaos as Doctor Doom casts his powers of order. The aftermath sees the Avengers rescued and the Red Onslaught is defeated. The Avengers and X-Men fight over the body of the Red Skull which could hold the essence of Charles Xavier. Steve Rogers refuses to release the body of the Red Skull to the X-Men which results with Havok breaking up the current version of the Uncanny Avengers.

Book Two: Inversion begins in Axis as World War Hate is over. Previously the Avengers wanted to contain the Red Skull instead of the X-Men. Now the Avengers want to keep him away from SHIELD. In New York during a hostage crisis, Carnage arrives and saves the day leaving Spider-Man baffled as everyone is still alive. Meanwhile Iron Man arrives in San Francisco to announce his new Extremis app which brings the attention of Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil and Stark begins drinking again.

At the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, the X-Men are united following the events of Schism in 2011. The X-Men want to wage war on humanity and Apocalypse has risen.  The Avengers decide to kill the Red Skull however the Hulk stands in their way. Luke Cage throws the Hulk aside making him angry to become Kluh the Hulk’s Hulk. After his rampage the Avengers discover the Red Skull has escaped. The turn of events in book two brings out the best of the series as the roles are reversed.

Following the escape of the Red Skull, the new Captain America Sam Wilson calls an Avengers meeting in Axis #5. The purpose of the meeting was to imprison the Avengers in a subatomic ant farm as one of them released the Red Skull. Spider-Man and Nova escape with the help of Magneto and they reunite with Steve Rogers. Apocalypse and the X-Men arrive to retrieve the Red Skull who has escaped.

In Avengers & X-Men #6, a week has past since last issue and Apocalypse leads the X-Men and succeeds in taking Manhattan as the Mutant capital. Matt Murdock confronts Tony Stark concerning the release of the Extremis App on the city of San Francisco. The Scarlet Witch takes on Doctor Doom for manipulating her powers. Loki tries to help Thor who beats him up until Spider-Man rescues him. Steve Rogers took the villains who were battling the Red Onslaught and made them the new Avengers. Sabretooth leads the Avengers to stop the X-Men before they use a DNA bomb to kill everyone without an X-Gene.

Avengers & X-Men: Axis #7 begins the third act as the new Dark Avengers assembled by Steve Rogers stop the X-Men from releasing Gene Bomb. Meanwhile the Scarlet Witch takes on Magneto, Quicksilver, and Doctor Doom.  We discover during her attack that the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were not the son and daughter of Magneto. The new Captain America and his Avengers discuss how to stop Steve Rogers who is searching for the Red Skull and the X-Men in New York. Apocalypse decapitates Deadpool as the Gene Bomb is about to go off.

Avengers & X-Men: Axis #7 begins the third act as the new Dark Avengers assembled by Steve Rogers stop the X-Men from releasing Gene Bomb. The new Captain America and his Avengers discuss how to stop Steve Rogers who is searching for the Red Skull and the X-Men in New York. Apocalypse decapitates Deadpool as the Gene Bomb is about to go off.

Avengers & X-Men: Axis #8 begins as Spider-Man attempts to stop the Gene Bomb however Carnage arrives and saves the city. Both the Avengers and X-Men battle it out until Steve Rogers decides its time to get the Red Skull. Superior Man and new Captain America attempt to stop him leading to a final issue of the Marvel series next week. The last two issues were mostly heroes against heroes slugfist with very little story as we approach the conclusion. Very little seems to be desired in the last issue as that story paves the way for a new Uncanny Avengers series in January.

The final of Avengers & X-Men: Axis is here and the original Captain America and the White Skull unite to revert everyone back to normalcy. The battle between the heroes resumes until Doctor Doom and the Scarlet Witch returns using the White Skull to revert the heroes and villains back. However the Superior Iron raises a shield preventing some of them to revert including Havok and Sabretooth. Now a new Uncanny Avengers team will emerge from the aftermath beginning in January. Overall the Axis event could have been told within the pages of Uncanny Avengers.

The problem I have with this issue was a continuity glitch the editor missed. The Axis event takes place before the first issue of Thor where She-Thor lifted the hammer. This issue shows Loki being able to lift the hammer when the wording was changed from ‘He’ to ‘She’ on the hammer.

This hardcover collects
