Film Review | Avengers: Age of Ultron [2015]

Following Captain America: The Winter Soldier, S.H.I.E.L.D. is dismantled after it was nearly taken over by HYDRA. The finale showed us Baron Von Strucker who is running experiments that led to the creation of the twins Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Their special powers brings the Age of Miracles which is Marvel Studios way of bringing ‘mutants’ into their universe after giving up that name to Fox Studios which produces the X-Men films. The beginning of Age of Ultron will have the Avengers taking on Strucker and rescuing the twins.

In 2013 Brian Michael Bendis wrote the comic version of Avengers: Age of Ultron. The story showed a future world devastated by Ultron after its creation years ago. The film version by Joss Whedon is bringing the origin of Ultron to the screen played by James Spader.

Avengers: Age of Ultron follows of the events of last year’s Captain America: Winter Soldier, where the Avengers are tracking down Hydra and confiscate their missing weapons including Loki’s scepter. The Avengers take down Baron Strucker and the scepter however his top experiments Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch escape capture. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner discover the scepter has something inside of it that is equivalent to J.A.V.I.S. and Stark wants to use it for his Ultron program a global peacekeeping initiative. Tony wants to protect the world from the aliens who want to attack the Earth from the first movie.

Ultron comes active and attacks the Avengers and takes Loki’s scepter and kills Baron Strucker. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are called by Ultron who is Stark’s fears come alive. After the Avengers discover Ultron killed Strucker they find a connection with Ulysses Klaw. Ultron wants the strongest substance on Earth – Vibranium which he obtains before the Avengers arrive to stop him. The Scarlet Witch uses her powers to make the Avengers nightmares and dreams come alive as a distraction for their escape leading to Iron Man using the Hulkbuster armor to stop the Hulk’s rampage.

The Avengers take refuge at Hawkeye’s home as Nick Fury arrives to help. Together they discover Ultron wants to evolve with his own body which is being grown by Dr. Helen Cho. He uses Loki’s scepter and removes the Mind Gem and places it on his soon-to-be new body. The Avengers manage to steal the body with the help of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch as they discover Ultron’s ultimate plan for human extinction.

Stark and Banner use Ultron’s stolen body and infuse J.A.V.I.S into it who is now called Vision. The best scene in the film is when Vision unites the Avengers against Ultron with his speech and lifts Thor’s hammer to show he is worthy. As the Avengers prepare for their final showdown with Ultron we discover Jocasta Easter egg in the scene with Stark. Ultron creates an extinction level event with the Vibranium by removing a piece of Slovakia land and crashing it back to Earth. The Avengers unite with Nick Fury and SHIELD and save the citizens of Slovakia as Stark and Thor destroy the land Ultron was using for his extinction level plans.

The Vision ultimately destroys Ultron and some of the Avengers leave the team including Stark, Thor, and Hulk. A new team rises with War Machine, Falcon, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Captain America. Overall the movie is quite confusing as it sets up other films including Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok and Avenger: Infinity War. Thanos makes an appearance as he did in the first Avengers film and takes the Infinity Gauntlet from a vault. If you are a Marvel fan then you know what’s coming however if you are not then you are a little lost with Age of Ultron.
