Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: Black Vortex [2015] by Sam Humphries | Brian Michael Bendis

Black Vortex is an expansive cosmic landscape with 13 chapters and over 25 characters. Running the show is Sam Humphries who is currently writing the entertaining Ant-Man series. Characters who come in contact with the Black Vortex become cosmically enhanced. Peter Quill’s father is amassing a number of cosmic forces and Kitty Pryde calls on the X-Men to help. The new status quo within the Black Vortex will roll through the upcoming Secret Wars event.

The first part of Black Vortex begins as Mr. Knife who is also Peter Quill’s father uses the Black Vortex to empower his Slaughter Squad. Both Peter and Kitty Pryde steal the Black Vortex and call the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy do decide what to do next. However Slaughter Squad arrives to take the Black Vortex back to Mr. Knife. A battle ensues between the combined forces of the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy versus the Slaughter Squad. To save her friends Gamora submitted to the Black Vortex and takes on the Slaughter Squad. 

Guardians of the Galaxy #24 begins as Gamora submitted to the Black Vortex as she takes on the Slaughter Squad. Magik transports them away and decides what to do next. Beast also submits himself to the Black Vortex as the teams become more divided on what to do next. Gamora decides it’s best for all of them to submit to the Black Vortex and shows them their cosmic potential.

Legendary Star-Lord #9 sees Angel submitting to the Black Vortex after seeing his cosmic potential. The Black Vortex powered heroes take on the non-powered heroes as Thanos arrives to claim the Black Vortex. However Jean Grey was manipulating them and the Black Vortex heroes take it away as Mr. Knife arrives and attacks.

All-New X-Men #38 begins with the Black Vortex powered Beast, Angel, and Gamora planning on remaking the universe in their image until Ronan the Accuser arrives on the scene and takes the Black Vortex. Meanwhile the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy survive the attack by Mr. Knife and escape as Beast, Angel, and Gamora attack the Kree homeworld of Hala. While escaping the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy conveniently bumps into Cyclops.

All-New X-Men #39 sees the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy get two distress calls from Spartax and Hala. The teams split up to encounter the chaos Slaughter Lords as well as the Black Vortex powered Beast, Angel, and Gamora. 

Guardians Team-Up #3 On Hala is under attack by Beast, Angel, and Gamora as Ronan tries to convince the Supreme Intelligence that he will submit to the Black Vortex to halt the attack. Ronan submits to the Black Vortex and halts their attack however is labeled a traitor to the Supreme Intelligence. On Spartax Gara the last of the Vicardi is back to destroy the Black Vortex while Cyclops, Iceman, and Groot are captured by the Slaughter Lords.

Guardians of the Galaxy #25 sees Hank McCoy realizing space-time is broken as the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy speak with the Supreme Intelligence concerning the Black Vortex. The teams decide to take the Black Vortex to save their friends as Mr. Knife and the Slaughter Lords arrive on Hala. They destroy the planet however lost the Black Vortex which is floating in space with Nova, Sam Alexander. 

Nova #28 Sam Alexander takes the Black Vortex to Earth however heads to Spartax due to the arrival of the Collector. He is quickly subdued by Thane who uses the Black Vortex to transform himself. 

Legendary Star-Lord #10 Thane uses his new cosmic powers to encase the Planet Spartax in amber. Mr. Knife presents the planet to the Brood Queen in exchange for an empire. The Brood is planning on using the amber encased population to implant their eggs to build their empire by seventy-two billion. Just as the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men plan on stopping them, the Slaughter Lords attacks. 

Cyclops #12 Cyclops, Iceman, and Groot break out of their imprisonment in Mr. Knife’s flying fortress and submit to the Black Vortex. They use their powers to steal the Black Vortex and join the fight with the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy on Spartax. The Black Vortex is taken by Captain Marvel who plans on taking it to Kitty Pryde so she use it to save Spartax.

Captain Marvel #24 After being pursued by the Slaughter Lords for taking the Black Vortex, Captain Marvel faces both Thane and Mr. Knife. Thane uses his powers against Captain Marvel however he imprisons Mr. Knife in amber instead. Gara arrives and disposes of Thane and pursues Captain Marvel who is taking the Black Vortex to Kitty Pryde.

Legendary Star-Lord #11 Captain Marvel arrives with the Black Vortex with Gara in tow. Gara warns them about power of the Black Vortex. Kitty offers herself claiming she is the last person who wants to submit to the Black Vortex so she is strong enough to endure its submission. After Kitty submits herself to the Black Vortex she now has the power to save Spartax. 

The Black Vortex Omega #1 Ronan arrives to take on the Slaughter Lords, X-Men, and Guardians of the Galaxy for the destruction of Hala the Kree Homeworld. Kitty Pryde uses her new cosmic powers from the Black Vortex to remove the amber from Spartax and destroys the Brood along with it. The Slaughter Lords retreat and some of the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy return their powers to the Black Vortex except for Angel and Gamora. The Collector takes the imprisoned Mr. Knife, Ronan promises to rebuild Hala and claim vengeance, while Peter Quill proposes to Kitty Pryde. This is an wonderful event driven story with lasting consequences for both our heroes and villains.
