Review: Star Wars: Kanan – The Last Padawan [2015] Greg Weisman

Star Wars: Kanan – The Last Padawan begins with the cast of Star Wars: Rebels as they travel to the planet Kaller where Kanan fought during the Clone Wars and faced Order 66. He trains with his Jedi Master Depa who gives him a Jedi Holocron to study from before the Emperor executes Order 66. The art and the writing is better than Marvel’s Star Wars and Darth Vader comics as it links the events of Revenge of the Sith to the Rebel series.

The second issue of Star Wars: Kanan sees Caleb Dume survive Order 66 and witnesses the death of his Master Depa Billaba. Caleb hides until he is friended by a smuggler Janus Kasmir who offers him a shower and a place to rest. However the Clone Troopers arrive searching for Caleb who steals Kasmir’s ship and heads towards the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s warning message arrives to keep away from the Jedi Temple until a New Hope emerges. However it is too late as Caleb quickly finds himself surrounded by Imperial forces.

Star Wars: Kanan #3 After being surrounded by Imperial forces, Caleb heads back to Kaller and returns the ship back to Kasmir who helps by disguising himself as a smuggler to avoid detection. However during a theft both Kasmir and Caleb are caught and Kasmir offers his capturers a Jedi in exchange for his freedom.

Star Wars: Kanan #4 sees Caleb captured and later rescued by his friend Kasmir. They continue to raid and struggle with the clone troopers behind them. While attempting to get another ship, Caleb is finally cornered by the clone troopers.

Star Wars: Kanan #5 Clone Troopers Commander Grey and Captain Styles take Kanan back to Kaller however Kasmir arrives as Kanan ejects himself into space. The Clone Troopers target Kasmir’s ship as Commander Grey realizes that they are the ones who betrayed both the Republic and the Jedi for the Empire. Grey sabotages his own ship so Kasmir can destroy it. Kanan takes a new ship and leaves Kasmir to go on his own. The story flashes to the present where his team lands on the Planet Kaller.

Star Wars: Kanan #6 Kanan and his Rebels return to the Planet Kaller for a mission where they meet the Governor Gamut Key. Kanan searches for Kasmir however discovers Gamut who offers an alliance with him. The issue ends with Kanan collapsing to the floor after being stabbed in the back by an assailant.
