Devil Comics Review | Star Wars Special: C-3P0 #1 [2016] James Robinson

Hype
The much delayed Star Wars Special: C-3P0 one shot was due to the Lucasfilm approval process. The announcement for this book came in September 2015 before the release of The Force Awakens and solicited for December 2015. The script was approved after Thanksgiving and the book was delayed until 2016.

Rehash
Resistance Droid Communication Chief C-3P0 crashes on a planet and leads a band of droids on a mission to save Admiral Ackbar before he is executed by the First Order. They have captured a droid from the First Order who knows the location of Admiral Ackbar. Together they deal with Spice Spiders and have philosophical discussions about their past memories. C-3P0 is saved by the First Order droid after being attacked by creatures on the planet and loses his arm. The First Order droid transfers the location of Admiral Ackbar and sacrifices himself for C-3P0 to get off the planet. All that’s left of the First Order droid is his red arm which C-3P0 uses to replace his missing arm to remember him.

Feedback
The issue begins with the exposition between droids and continues till the end. Overall it was nice to find out how C-3P0 received his missing arm however the process of reading this issue seemed artificial. Writer James Robinson has to submit to Lucasfilm his script which is tightly controlled. This may play apart in the final product as it becomes unbelievable a First Order droid sacrificed himself for a Resistance droid.
