Devil Comics Reviews | Death of X [2016]

After the Avengers Vs. X-Men and the milestone Uncanny X-Men #600 where the mutants had a prosperous future ahead, Marvel Comics decided to jump the shark by creating a threat to their population in the form of the Inhumans’ Terrigen Mists. Death of X is a prelude to the upcoming Inhumans Vs. X-Men limited series where the mutants have only weeks to live on the planet. Death of X is a flashback series after Secret Wars and seems like an unnecessary story which should have been told in the pages of the regular X-Men comic series. The X-Men receive a distress call from the Multiple Man on Muir Island and discover the Terrigen Mists are behind the mutant deaths. The second issue sees Medusa and Storm teaming up after Cyclops informs the world of the consequences of the Terrigen Mists to the Mutant population as Emma asks for Magneto to help.

Tensions rise in between Storm and the Inhumans in Madrid. The Inhumans use their powers to save the city and the mutants. However the mutants take it another way and kidnaps the Inhuman who used his powers before Magneto arrives. Cyclops uses Alchemy to neutralize the Terrigen Mist. The Inhumans arrive and Black Blot kills Cyclops however it was all an illusion. Cyclops died in the very first issue due to exposure to the Terrigen Mist. Emma Frost has been manipulating everything from the beginning.

The series is very anti-climactic as we already know the X-Men escapes to Limbo while the Inhumans are front and center expanding their population. We also know what happens after the upcoming Inhumans Vs. X-Men event as the X-Men return to becoming heroes of the world with four team books and three solo character books. These books will be released by the time the third Wolverine movie Logan which is released in March 2017.
