Film Review: Guardians of the Galaxy [2014]

Director James Gunn brings a new Marvel franchise to life with Guardians of the Galaxy. Peter Quill is taken from Earth and over 28 years becomes the outlaw Star-Lord. He steals one of the Infinity stones with both his mentor Yondu and Ronan on his trail. On the Nova Corps homeworld Xandar, Rocket and Groot discover a bounty on Quill so they are on the hunt as well. After a ruckus between Quill, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot, the Nova Corps take them all to a space prison where they are joined by Dax the Destroyer who wants revenge on Ronan for killing his wife and child.

They all break out of the prison with the Infinity stone and travel to find the Collector played by Benicio del Toro who appeared at the end of Thor: The Dark World. The Collector tells them the history of the Infinity stones and the Tesseract last seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as Aether from The Dark World. Ronan finally obtains the Infinity stone from the Quill and head to Xandar to destroy the Nova Corps homeworld. The Guardians of the Galaxy unite with the Nova Corps to stop Ronan. Quill uses the Infinity stone to destroy Ronan and discover he is half human as his father is not from Earth.

The villain who formed an alliance with Loki from the end of Avengers is introduced as the tyrant Thanos who is trying to collect all of the Infinity stones to form the Infinity Gauntlet. The subplot of the Infinity stones will come together in the third Avengers film in 2018. The post-credit scene includes the Collector and a free Howard the Duck. Guardians of the Galaxy was a fun action-packed film which raises the bar for other sci-fi films including Star Trek and Star Wars.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – 5 OUT OF 5
