Star Wars: Darth Vader Volume 1 [2015] by Kieron Gillen | Salvador Larocca

The first issue of Darth Vader begins with him paying the price for his failure of unsuccessfully preventing the Rebels from destroying the Death Star in Star Wars Episode IV: The New Hope. Vader is now under Grand General Tagge who he choked during Episode IV. He is sent to Tatooine to negotiate with Jabba the Hut however he forces him to give him what he needs. Vader hires Boba Fett to track down the X-Wing pilot who destroyed the Death Star and is also Obi-Wan’s apprentice. Darth Vader #2 begins with Darth Vader disabling and capturing a pirate ship which was after Imperial cargo. The Empire uses the ship to track it back to base and destroy them.

The third issue of Darth Vader was solicited with a cover of an Asian woman with two black droids similar to C-3P0 and R2-D2. The cover alone pushed the issue into a second printing. Darth Vader needs the help of rogue archaeologist Doctor Aphra abroad the Ark Angel who has Triple Zero and BT-1 an assassin droid. Vader needs private resources and troops with unquestioning loyalty so Aphra offers to take him to a droid factory on Geonosis.

Darth Vader #4 Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra head to Geonosis to build his own army against the Emperor who has his own agenda. One of Vader’s hired bounty hunters returns with a prisoner who has information on what the Emperor is plotting. The information reveals the Emperor is creating replacements for Vader who plans to destroy them all.

Darth Vader #5 Darth Vader takes his army to find his replacements however the Emperor is there. The Emperor wants a display of his technically enhanced warriors against Vader.

Darth Vader #6 After the display of powers between Darth Vader and his replacements, the Emperor reveals he was disappointed with Vader on Mustafar and now wants him to prove himself worthy. Meanwhile Boba Fett arrives with information concerning the name of the pilot who destroyed the Death Star. The issue crosses over with the finale of Star Wars #6 but here we are given how Vader felt knowing he now has a son who he will use to overthrow the Emperor.
