Devil Comics Review | Ant-Man and the Wasp [2018]

After Civil War and before Infinity War, Scott Lang is under house arrest but teams up with Hope Van Dyne and Hank Pym on a new mission. The sequel introduces Ghost and the return of the original Wasp as well as the Quantum Realm. The finale sees Ant-Man trapped in the Quantum Realm as the others are wiped out of existence due to the events of Infinity War and Thanos.

Devil Comics Review | Avengers [2018] Infinity War

The Infinity War is an accumulation of ten years of Marvel Studios storytelling. The setting begins in space to showcase the unlimited landscape this story will take place in before contracting back to Earth. Throughout Infinity War the story goes back and forth from space to Earth. 

Space Stone

Infinity War begins after the final moments of Thor: Ragnarok as the Thanos and the Black Order arrives to retrieve the Space Stone from Loki. Hemidall sends the Hulk to Earth leaving Thanos no choice to kill him and Loki. Thanos sends his Black Order to retrieve the two Infinity Stones the Time and the Mind on Earth while he finds the others including the Reality and the Soul Stone. Thanos has already retrieve the Power Stone on Xandar the homeworld of the Nova Corps.

Time Stone

The Hulk arrives on Earth at the home of Dr. Strange who gathers Tony Stark as the Black Order arrives to retrieve the Time Stone from Dr. Strange. They succeed and the ship heads back to Thanos’ homeworld of Titan with Tony Stark, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange.

Mind Stone

The story focuses on Vision and the Scarlet Witch and their relationship before the Black Order arrives to retrieve the Mind Stone. With overwhelming odds, Steve Rogers and his Secret Avengers arrive to stop them and together with Vision and the Scarlet Witch they all head to Wakanda.

Reality Stone

The Guardians of the Galaxy find Thor floating in space after Thanos destroyed the Asgardian ship. The Guardians discover Thanos is gathering the Infinity Stones and his next stop is Knowhere where the Collector has the Reality Stone. The Guardians heads towards Knowhere to retrieve the Reality Stone while Thor, Rocket and Groot go off to somewhere to create the Thanos killer – the Stormbreaker. The Guardians arrive on Knowhere only to discover Thanos has already taken the Reality Stone and he gets her adopted daughter Gamora because she knows the location of the Soul Stone. 

Soul Stone
Thanos tortures Gamora’s sister Nebula until Gamora reveals the location of the Soul Stone. She reveals it to him and together they head towards its location and find the Soul Stone’s keeper the Red Skull who has been trapped on the planet since the First Avenger. He reveals the Soul Stone can only be retrieved if the bearer sacrifices the one thing he loves. Thanos sacrifices his adopted daughter Gamora and retrieve the Soul Stone. 

Titan (Time Stone)

Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and Spider-Man arrive on Titan along with the Guardians and together they await for Thanos’ arrival. Doctor Strange discovers there are 14 million possibilities but only one where the heroes win. Thanos defeats them all and Doctor Strange surrenders the Time Stone to save Tony Stark believing this is the only way to win against Thanos.

Earth (Mind Stone)

The Secret Avengers teams up with Black Panther in Wakanda and fend off against Black Order which they defeat until Thanos arrives and retrieves the Mind Stone from Vision. The Scarlet Witch destroys Vision to prevent the Mind Stone from falling into the hands of Thanos. He understands why she destroyed the Mind Stone and he uses the Time Stone to bring back Vision and retrieve the Mind Stone. Now with all six stones Thanos has assembled the Infinity Gauntlet. Thor arrives and impales Thanos with the Stormbreaker. Thanos replies by saying Thor should have aimed for his head and then he snaps his fingers wiping out half of the universe.  As the half the universe disappears, Nick Fury sends out a distress call to Captain Marvel. Thanos wins and watches the sunset smiling.

Devil Comics Review | Thanos [2018] Thanos Wins

After killing the Chitauri King, Thanos is dragged to the end of time millions of years into the future by the Cosmic Ghost Rider for King Thanos who wants his younger self’s help to kill the Fallen One and win Death’s love. The future Thanos convinces his younger self by saying his true name - Dione. The Cosmic Ghost Rider feeds Thanos' dog who is the Hulk and he introduces himself as Frank Castle. The Fallen One is revealed to be the Silver Surfer who has come to destroy Kill Thanos.

The origin of the Cosmic Ghost Rider is told as Thanos arrives on Earth killing everything and Frank Castle makes a deal with the devil Mephisto. Years later Frank now the Ghost Rider makes another deal under Galactus to become his herald granting him powers to become the Cosmic Ghost Rider. Together they hunt King Thanos who kills Galactus and offers the Cosmic Ghost Rider to become his right hand man. 

Now King Thanos, the Cosmic Ghost Rider, and Thanos face off against the Fallen One Silver Surfer who becomes worthy as the wielder of the hammer Mjolnir as the Hulk joins the fight. But King Thanos uses Surtur's sword to impale both the Fallen One and Bruce Banner. After their demise, Death shows up and Thanos realizes why he was brought into the future by King Thanos. He wanted Thanos to kill him so he can be with Death. Thanos beats his future self but before killing him he takes the Time Stone to go back to his own time and erase King Thanos. An awesome story with a satisfying conclusion - looking forward to reading more Donny Cates in the future! The Thanos Annual explores various eras of the Mad Titan from the perspective of the Cosmic Ghost Rider who is about to enter Valhalla.

Devil Comics Review | Avengers [2018] No Surrender

No Surrender is a 16-week event where the Earth is stolen and unites all the Avengers team together cultivating into a new team prior to the 700th issue of the title. Cosmic objects crash down on Earth as both the Black Order and the Lethal Legion arrive as well as the lost Avenger Valerie Vector, Voyager. Her disappearance is explained when she faced off against the Squadron Sinister's Victory and was erased from existence. The Black Order and the Lethal Legion arrive and they cannot slay one another until the match begins. The Avengers assemble to decide what is the best to deal with Earth as the Black Order arrives and destroys the mansion.

Devil Comics Review | Marvel Legacy #1 [2017]

The Avengers of One Million BC unite to fend Earth against a Celestial which later rises in the present with Loki. Robbie Reyes has visions of the past and ends up in Cape Town, South Africa until he faces Starbrand who wants something ancient to stay buried and will kill anyone to tries to unearth it. In Jotunheim Loki gathers the Frost Giants to steal something from a Shield storage facility on Midgard. The Avengers stop them however one of the Frost Giants steals the crate and ends up facing a resurrected Wolverine.

Devil Comics Review | Secret Empire [2017] Nick Spencer

Secret Empire began during the Welcome to Pleasant Hill when an older Steve Rogers is restored to his youth thanks to the living Cosmic Cube called the Kobik belonging to the Red Skull. However the Cosmic Cube rewrote the origin of Captain America by making him a Hydra Agent. Now Hydra asserts itself to take over the world while the heroes are divided by an invasion by the Chitauri, Graviton attacking in New York, and Hydra forces in Russia. 

While the remaining heroes are hidden away at a base outside of Vegas, Steve Rogers executes Rick Jones for relaying information to the heroes while laying waste to Vegas. However the remaining heroes receives the message that Captain America was changed by the Cosmic Cube. They have to unite the shards to return Steve Rogers back to normal. 

Both sides needs to tangle with Ultron to get the first shard. Iron Man claims the first two shards while Captain America is on his tail with a resurrected Bruce Banner. Emma Frost has another shard to rule the mutant nation of New Tian and Black Panther and Wakanda has another shard. 

Captain America regains the shards from the Underground at the cost of Madame Hydra who sacrificed her life. Black Widow goes for the kill as Miles Morales faces Steve Rogers face-to-face. Rogers kills the Black Widow as Morales beats him however stops short from killing him. Morales is arrested and Sam Wilson takes up Captain America's shield. Sam builds up the resistance while Captain America captures the Black Panther and the residents of New Tian. However the mutants rebelled and Black Panther is saved by the Winter Soldier. Now the heroes face off against Captain Hydra until he is stopped by Kobik who brings back the original untainted Steve Rogers. Captain America returns and stops Hydra from using the Cosmic Cube to rewrite the world.  

Steve Rogers confronts Hydra Cap in prison on his choices and consequences. Hydra Cap believes in the reality which was created for him by Kobik. Now Rogers deals with the aftermath of distrust which was created by Captain Hydra.

DC Comics begins its July Solicitations with Dark Days: The Casting follows The Forge in June leading to August’s Dark Nights: Metal and its spin-off Dark Matter. DC Comics’ Dark Matter which is an artist-centric approach series drawn by today’s best artists including Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and John Romita Jr. who also drawn The Forge and The Casting. The first appearance of the characters in Dark Matter could be in both the Forge and the Casting.

Marvel Comics begins its July Solicitations with Secret Empire while also promoting the 10 issue maxi series Generations for August and September. Clearly DC has a better publishing strategy because it focuses on new ideas rather than consolidating old ones. However Marvel is releasing Marvel Legacy #1 one shot similar to DC Rebirth #1 where some of the titles will return to their original numbering.

Marvel Comics Pull List: Secret Empire Last mega event till 2019.

In 2016 IDW Publishing released Revolution which brought various Hasbro properties together including Transformers, G.I Joe, and MASK. They are competing with both DC and Marvel which also have shared universes. The purpose of a shared universe is basically multiplying and maximize sales towards the target audience. One reader would buy two books within a shared universe to complete the story rather than one.

Weekly Roundup | Venom #150, Scarlet Spider #1, Secret Empire, Generations

After last year’s DC Rebirth, Marvel Comics may also be bringing legacy back to their characters in 2017. In April Eddie Brock will return as Venom as the series celebrates its #150 issue in May. The first issue came in 1993 with Venom: Lethal Protector.

Following Spider-Man: The Clone Conspiracy, Peter David and Mark Bagley take on Ben Reilly as the Scarlet Spider and return the clone back to his original costume by the end of the first arc.

In May Marvel brings Secret Empire #1 which kicked off with a zero issue in April. The series promises to be the final political social commentary for the foreseeable future as Marvel plans on bringing legacy and heroism back to the forefront in September following the conclusion of the series. Last year Marvel released Civil War II which dealt with profiling in the Marvel Universe using an Inhuman to predict crimes.

While Marvel plans to bring legacy and heroism back, they are also teaming up with Archie to bring comic digest collections. The digest will ship six times a year with four in 2017. Marvel is planning on reaching and exposing themselves to a new audience with more digestible collections instead of the monthly series or trades which could be harder to collect and follow.

Marvel Comics also released a teaser by Alex Ross showcasing the classic Marvel heroes and their inspired counterparts titled Generations. Marvel has announced by the Fall of 2017, the classic Marvel Universe will be back in full swing with Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and Odinson back as Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, respectively.

Whether bringing legacy back to the Marvel Universe will help sales depends on the story associated with it. DC Rebirth brought the Watchmen into the DC Universe which propelled the story forward until 2018 when everything will come together. Marvel seems to building a stronger foundation as the Avengers movies in 2018 and 2019 concludes the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Last year comic book stores ordered 0.3% more in comics and graphic novels than in 2015. Overall there was a 1% increase in comics or a million more comics (99 million in total according to Diamond) and 2.1% increase in graphic novels.  

Devil Comics Review | Civil War II [2016] Brian Michael Bendis

Hype During FCBD Civil War II, She-Hulk took a missile to the chest while War Machine was beaten by Thanos. The zero issue begins before the events of the FCDB with the She-Hulk in the court room and James Rhodes being asked by the President to become his next Secretary of State and eventually become President. We also witness Ulysses being affected by the Terrigen Mist and as the issue ends he sees a vision of a major city destroyed. The theme of Civil War II deals with our own prejudices we have with people and how they behave. Do we judge them before they commit a crime or afterwards? Writer Brian Michael Bendis brings a strong opening issue dealing with the ideal of challenging our own prejudices. 

Rehash The series begins as the Avengers and Inhumans take on a Celestial with the help of Doctor Strange and his Sorcerers. Afterwards they are introduced to Ulysses who saw the future and warned them about the incoming Celestial. A debate rages between Captain Marvel and Tony Stark about the ethics of rushing to judgments before the events happen. The events for FCBD happens were the War Machine meets his end against Thanos. Stark discovers the Ultimates ambushed Thanos and it resulted with the loss of James Rhodes.

The second issue sees Tony Stark kidnapping Ulysses from the Inhumans and suggesting his predictions could be based on bias. The Ultimates and Avengers arrive as Ulysses projects a vision of the Hulk killing them all. Captain Marvel pays Bruce Banner a visit. By the third issue we are flash forward to the trial of Hawkeye who killed Banner and was convinced he was going to change into the rampaging Hulk in Ulysses' vision. The fourth issue begins with the acquittal of Hawkeye and dividing the heroes into two camps with one led by Captain Marvel and the other is Iron Man once Tony Stark explains how Ulysses' powers work. 

The Triskelion is under siege as the heroes fight among themselves. They stop when Ulysses gets another vision of Miles Morales Spider-Man killing Steve Rogers Captain America. Captain Marvel arrests Spider-Man as the other heroes watch. However Iron Man and Captain America allow him to leave with Thor. As the teams regroup, Maria Hill gets word that Spider-Man is at the Capitol where the vision of Ulysses took place. Both Captain America and Captain Marvel arrive at the scene making an attempt to resolve the situation until Iron Man arrives and battles Captain Marvel. 

After the battle where Captain Marvel defeats Tony Stark, Ulysses offers other Marvel futures including Monsters Unleashed, Inhumans Vs. X-Men, Miles Morales defeating Captain America, and Killraven. The splash pages seem more like an advertising gimmick than anything else. 

Feedback The issue relies heavily on the FCBD book which plays apart in the middle of the issue. Overall it is a strong start however the five dollar price tag is a turn off for most customers who want to read the series. Issue three was heavily marketed as one Marvel character murders another.

Devil Comics Review | Doctor Strange [2016] Benedict Cumberbatch

Prelude Wong and the Master of the Mystic Arts are attempting to track down a woman who possesses an ancient artifact. Wong failed and now Kaecilius makes an attempt and fails. Now all the Masters gather to defeat her and her ancient artifact is taken to the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York. Later the Ancient one takes on the Wielder of the Arrow to reclaim the Arrow of Apollon and its bow. 

After losing his surgical hands due to a car accident, former neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange searches the world for a cure until he is guided to the Ancient One who teaches him about other dimensions and the mystic arts. The villain Kaecillius takes ancient texts to bring Earth to the Dark Dimension so everyone will live for eternity. He destroyed the London Sanctorum and targets the New York one where he confronts Strange who inherits the Cloak of Levitation during their battle. During the battle with Kaecillius, the Ancient One falls after revealing she used the energy from the Dark Dimension to extend her life.

Kaecillius targets the Hong Kong Sanctorum and Strange uses the Infinity Stone from the Eye of Agamotto to control time. Doctor Strange enters the Dark Dimension to confront Dormammu and uses the Infinity Stone to create an endless loop to trap him. Strange offers a deal to remove Kaecillius and his followers from Earth. Mordo does not appreciate Strange using the Infinity Stone to save people by manipulating time and the Ancient One using the Dark Dimension to extend her life. He decides it is time to reduce the sorcerers on by taking away their powers. The sequel is set up at the end of the film where we see the origins of two powerful sorcerer supremes.

Devil Comics Review | The Astonishing Ant-Man [2016] The Trial of Ant-Man

Scott Lang is taken to jail after rescuing his daughter from Darren Cross. He hires She-Hulk to represent him in court while his daughter Cassie kidnaps the Power Broker and Cross investigates his lab with the help of Egghead becomes the new Yellowjacket. Janice Lincoln AKA the Beetle becomes the prosecuting attorney in Lang's case while the She-Hulk defends him. Janice promises to throw the case if Scott can get her Pym Particles from his suit during the trial. Scott puts on the suit however Pym's lab is inside his helmet so Crossfire, Egghead, and Yellowjacket pop out. But Hank has his friends in the court room including his daughter Cassie, She-Hulk, and Darla. Cassie saves his father by taking away Cross' Pym Particles which power his Yellowjacket suit. Scott is freed and reunites with his daughter Stinger to go out and fight crime together as long as she is back by eleven. The thirteen issue series was very well thought out and enjoyable thanks to the mind of Nick Spencer.
