Devil Comics Review | Dark Nights [2017] Metal

Writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo bring their Batman run to a peak building upon their previous run on the series. Mysterious metals were hinted throughout the series and now the source seems to have come from the Dark Multiverse. Snyder has told us that Metal is the opposite of Rebirth, which was built on the Legacy of characters. Metal is the introduction of something new and mysterious that has always been lurking throughout the DC Universe.

Metal begins when Challengers Mountain pops up in Gotham City and the Justice League investigate and discover there is a full scale invasion from the Dark Multiverse. Batman decides to use baby Darkseid to stop the invasion however he was lured into a trap to open a portal to the Dark Multiverse by the Court of Owls. Now the Dark Knights lead by Barbatos are unleashed on Earth and Batman is lost in the Dark Multiverse.

Superman is taken to the Oblivion Bar where he meets the Justice League members, Detective Chimp, Mr. Terrific, and Deathstroke. They divide themselves into four teams to stop the Batmen and Barbatos using Nth Metal. Wonder Woman, Doctor Fate and Kendra travel to the Rock of Eternity to search for Hawkman's mace. Aquaman and Deathstroke travel to Atlantis to find hidden Nth Metal while Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, and Plastic Man seek Nth Metal on Thanagar Prime. Superman uses the Anti-Monitor antenna to travel through the Phantom Zone to get to the Dark Multiverse. However Superman discovers it was a trapped and Barbatos needed his body to replace Batman so he can power the battery to complete the circuit so more nightmares can enter Earth.

At the Rock of Eternity the Wonder Woman team faces the avatars of the seven deadly sins. On Thanagar Prime, Green Lantern team deals with the new ruler of Thanagar, Onimar Synn and Starro the Conqueror. Superman and Batman is rescued by Daniel who explains Barbatos wants the Multiverse to sink into darkness. They travel to the Forge of Worlds where they meet the Dragon of Barbatos, Hawkman. Back at the Rock of Eternity, Kendra becomes Lady Blackhawk as Black Adam arrives and reveals he and Vandal Savage made a deal with Barbatos. The finale of Metal leads to more stories including the upcoming NO JUSTICE mini-series leading to the new Justice League series. Overall the story had a great start but falls flat as the excitement is carried over with other upcoming issues.

Frank lost all sense of purpose until the Volthoom the First Lantern appeared and offered him to help find the Phantom Ring a ring that doesn’t choose its bearer. Frank steals the Phantom Ring which makes him become any Lantern he needs and kidnaps the Guardian Rami. Green Lanterns Baz and Jessica track down Frank however his Phantom Ring changes him from a Green Lantern to an Orange Lantern. Both Jessica and Baz track the Phantom Lantern Frank Laminski who uses their own fears against them.

Devil Comics Review | Green Lanterns: Rebirth #1 [2016]

Hype Writer Geoff Johns brought Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns back to new heights beginning with Green Lantern: Rebirth in 2004. Flash forward to the New 52, Geoff Johns introduced Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. Now these two characters will star in their own series written by Sam Humphries as they take on the Red Lanterns.

Rehash An unknown Guardian who is hunted by the Dominators carries a new mysterious ring. An unknown aircraft arrives on Earth and signals new Green Lanterns Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz to the scene where they confront a Manhunter. Both of the failed to take down the Manhunter however it was only a test by Hal Jordan who merges their Lantern batteries together so they can collaborate better. Now they will be trained by the Justice League when the Green Lantern Corps are not around. We learn following the Blackest Night and Brightest Day the Red Dawn will begin.

Feedback This Rebirth title is better than the Superman and Batman as it brings in the legacy of the Green Lantern Corps. The Corps are increasing in number because a threat is looming ahead. The series focuses on two minority characters which were introduced within the New 52 and this title pays tribute to their legacy.

Devil Comics Review | DC Universe: Rebirth #1 [2016]

Hype Following 2011’s New 52, DC Comics revitalizes the comic industry with Rebirth and bring legacy back to their characters. The one-shot promises a death of a character and the return of three characters to the DC Universe. DC is celebrating the event by releasing a limited edition midnight cover on the day of its release. The book is 80 pages and for only $2.99 and the final page promises to be explosive.

Rehash The DC Universe Rebirth special is a continuation from the events of the Darkseid War and the Final Days of Superman story arcs which their finales were both released on the same day. During the Darkseid War, three versions of the Joker were revealed as well as Wonder Woman having a twin brotherwhile the Final Days of Superman saw the death of the New 52 Superman. The issue begins with the return of the Pre-Flashpoint Wally West attempting to reach out to Batman who has forgotten him in the first chapter Lost

The second chapter Legacy explores the Justice Society of America, Legion of Super-Heroes, the Microverse and the death of Pandora who brought the New 52 together. She was heavily marketed and her appearance was in every New 52 first issue in 2011. Her death will bring cheers for DC fans.

The third chapter Love features the aftermath of the Final Days of Superman where heroes like Green Arrow, Superman, and Aquaman are reconnecting their past loves including Wally West and Linda Park.

The fourth chapter Life sees Wally West and the New 52 version who are revealed to be cousins. Wally meets the New 52 Flash to say goodbye and to let him know someone has infected history to make people forget. Barry remembers Wally and brings him back while remembering the past. The finale reveals they are being watched and they are the ones who are behind the missing heroes, history, and legacies: Alan Moore’s Watchmen.

Feedback Writer Geoff Johns begins the story by relating to the readers on what it is like to have read the New 52 for the past five years where forgotten heroes, legacies, and history which created a foundation of great stories were all erased. It was been revealed the stories within the Rebirth titles will build to an event in August 2018. DC fans would return to the company after reading this issue. It brings an optimistic and hopeful DC Universe back as well as preparing them for the incorporation of the Watchmen universe in 2018.

Review | Star Trek - Green Lantern: The Spectrum War [2015]

The first issue begins as Ganthet escapes to another universe from Black Hand with various Lantern rings after the death of Green Lantern Mogo. In another universe, the crew of the starship Enterprise discovers the corpse of Ganthet and various Lantern rings and bring them back to the ship. The Klingon General Chang arrives to capture Kirk and his crew to bring them back to the Planet Kronos. The Lantern rings become active and search for suitable hosts with Chang becoming part of the Sinestro Crops, Chekov becomes a Blue Lantern, Uhura becomes a Star Sapphire, and McCoy becomes part of the Indigo Tribe. Green Lantern Hal Jordan arrives requesting an answer as to why Ganthet’s remains are on the Enterprise.

The second issues see the newest member of Sinestro Corps General Chang attacking the Enterprise as a new Red Lantern and Orange Lantern are chosen. Hal Jordan defends the Enterprise while Blue Lantern Chekov uses his power to escape Chang who returns to his homeworld and murder his superiors. However now Chang faces his new superior Sinestro who arrives on Kronos.

The third issue reveals how Ganthet escaped to the Star Trek Universe using the combine power of the rings to rip space-time. Hal Jordan explains to Kirk how the DC Universe ended with Nekron. However the leaders of the other Lanterns escaped as well during the Last Light. On Gornar a Red Lantern is visited by Atrocitus while on Romulus Larfleeze makes a visit to the new ring bearer. On the Kronos Sinestro educates a new member as Saint Walker and Carol Ferris of the Star Sapphires are in the new universe. They reveal Nekron also made it through during the Last Light and building a Black Lantern army on the ashes of Vulcan.

The fourth issue flashbacks on how Nekron took over the universe by destroying the central batteries and killing the White Lantern Kyle Rayner. In the present a starbase is attacked by the Red Lanterns as Sinestro and the Klingons arrive along with Hal Jordan and the Enterprise. Sinestro takes out the crew of the Enterprise and Hal Jordan assumes control to strike back as the dead rises from the ashes of destroyed Vulcan homeworld.

The fifth issue sees the eruption of the War of the Light in the Star Trek Universe as John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kilowog arrives to save Jordan. Kirk and Spock discover the Planet Vulcan has returned and informs Jordan so has Nekron. The remaining Green Lantern Corps capture Sinestro and imprison him on the Enterprise while Scotty manufactures a White Lantern Ring. The Enterprise heads towards Vulcan where the Green Lanterns and the crew face Nekron and his Vulcan Black Lanterns.

The finale sees the Green Lanterns and the crew of the Enterprise take on Nekron and his Vulcan Black Lanterns. Kirk takes McCoys ring and puts it on Spock which brings the other Lantern rings to him except for a Green Lantern ring. The Green Lantern Corps focuses their energies onto Spock which rebirths the Life Entity. Nekron is destroyed by the Life Entity and the Planet Vulcan dies again. The aftermath sees the Green Lanterns incorporated into the Star Trek Universe while Star Fleet issues force-field rings to each cadet. This crossover was very well put together and opens up a possible sequel with the newly formed universe consisting of both DC and Star Trek characters.

Review | Justice League: Darkseid War: Green Lantern #1 [2015] Tom King

During the first act of Justice League: Darkseid War, Darkseid is killed by the Anti-Monitor and his army rushes to the Central Battery on Oa. They took the Central Battery and merged it with a Mother Box and forced Green Lanterns to become Gods. However they refused so they were killed and their bodies were turned to more Parademons. Hal Jordan realizes when Darkseid died the Mother Box began searching to find a new master so it used the Parademons to find one. The Parademons take Hal Jordan into the Mother Box to become the God of Light.

Hal Jordan restores everything back to normal on Oa. Then Hal Jordan travels back in time to talk to his younger self and console him after their father passes. Hal answers to his younger self why God just watches. It’s because we get to create the world. Hal gives up being a God and destroys the Mother Box. He heads towards Gotham to stop Batman from killing the Joker. Writer Tom King wrote a self-contained story and brought the concept of Will into the forefront by summing up who Hal Jordan really is: A Green Lantern and not a New God. This is a great one shot supplementing the Darkseid War.

DC Comics Convergence [2015] by Jeff King | Carlo Pagulayan | Stephen Segovia

Convergence is a two-month epic consisting of nine issues while the regular DC titles are placed on hiatus. The series spins out of New 52: Futures End and Earth 2: World’s End. The villains are Brainiac who has been collecting multiverses and a new one named Telos which will be introduced within the series.

Convergence #0 begins with Superman meeting multiple Brainiacs who reveal the Master has not returned from Earth 0. Unknown to them the Master Brainiac was defeated in Futures End. We learn Brainiac has been defeated by Superman throughout the multiverse however dies by other means. The events of Superman: Doomed where Superman was infected by the Doomsday virus was orchestrated by Brainiac after witnessing the Death of Superman in another universe. The cities of dead worlds are here from throughout the Multiverse. Now Telos releases the domes that separate each world so the characters will fight to survive. The surviving heroes of Earth 2 after World’s End will arrive in the first issue of Convergence. Overall this is a great issue if you have been following the events of Superman: Doomed, Earth 2 World’s End and New 52 Futures End.

Convergence #1 begins as solicited a few months ago with the Earth 2 heroes arriving and Telos releases the domes of the different worlds from across the DC Multiverse to fight for their survival. The book and the ties-ins are more nostalgia than anything more by bringing back characters and events from the 70s, 80’s, and 90s together. Too many characters with very little story and the book reminds me of Countdown: Arena in 2007 which has a similar premise.

Convergence #2 begins as the heroes of Earth 2 free themselves and fight back against Telos. Green Lantern Alan Scott discovers Telos is afraid of something beneath the planet. Meanwhile Thomas Wayne and Richard Grayson head towards another Gotham where they meet Bruce Wayne. The Bat symbol on Bruce Wayne changes form panel-to-panel which makes it annoying as it shows the artists rushed through this weekly series. The finale sees the heroes meet Deimos who claims he can get them off the planet.

Convergence #3 Telos heads to the City of Kandor the first city Brainiac took. It’s residents along with Nightwing and Firebird oppose Telos which leads them to their fates. Thomas Wayne and Richard Grayson take on the Pre-Flashpoint Batman villains but Wayne sacrifices himself as the Joker arrives and shoots Grayson. Telos arrives in time and kills the Joker and asks Grayson where are the Earth 2 heroes. Meanwhile Deimos takes the Earth 2 heroes below the planet into another displaced reality Skartaris.

Convergence #4 The Earth 2 heroes travel through Skartaris to get to the castle where the Warlord has imprisoned the Time Masters consisting on Monarch, Extant, Hourmen, as well as the Time Trapper. Deimos is a high priest who wanted Skartaris for years and takes the power of the Time Masters. Deimos tells Brainiac he can free from his imprisonment from the events in New 52 Futures End.

Convergence #5 Demios uses the powers of the Time Masters to reveal to Telos who he is. Brainiac used Telos in exchange for saving his family. The Earth 2 heroes attack Demios however the castle collapses so they travel to gather the rest of the heroes from the other cities as Richard Grayson accepts his destiny as Batman. Demios arrives at Brainiac’s occupation chamber and announces to the heroes of the cities that there is no longer as reason to fight since Brainiac is banished and he will protect them for a price.

Convergence #6 begins in the New 52 Universe as a arrival of a new planet draws the attention of Superman, the Red Lanterns, Darkseid, the Monitor as well as the Oracle. Deimos wants loyalty otherwise he will destroy cities within the hour. The heroes of the various cities unite against Deimos. Grayson speaks to Telos who recently found out the truth about himself and asks him to join the heroes to save the world from Deimos. As the heroes gather, Deimos has gathered his own army of villains to kill them all.

Convergence #7 in the New 52 the Justice League and Stormwatch gather with Oracle as war erupts on the world of Telos. Deimos and Telos battle each other as both the heroes and villains discovers Deimos wants all of them to die so he can use their energies to recreate the world. Hal Jordan as Parallax finally destroys Deimos however the power of the Time Masters are released into the New 52 Universe and reality is coming apart.

Convergence #8 as reality comes apart Booster Gold and Wave Rider arrives and releases Brainiac who gives us his origin. He is a survivor of the multiverse from Crisis to Infinite Earths, Infinite Crisis, 52, and Flashpoint. Brainiac plans on sending everyone home and resetting the multiverse however something is blocking him, the first Crisis. Brainiac send Superman with Lois and their daughter, Parallax, Flash, and Supergirl to prevent the collapse of the multiverse. The multiverse is saved and Brainiac returns to Earth-0 as the heroes of Earth 2 remain on the world of Telos as it is being destroyed. However with Brainiac and Telos gone their ties to the world is severed. The world of Telos becomes the new Earth 2 and it returns back to its universe. Green Lantern uses his ring to signal the refugees back to the new Earth 2.

E92: Convergence #2 | Convergence: Green Lantern/Parallax #1 | Suicide Squad #1 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

Convergence: Green Lantern/Parallax #1 begins as former Green Lantern Kyle Rayner visits Hal Jordan in jail. We are reminded of the nineties events that led Hal to become Parallax which took place during the Reign of Supermen. Telos from Convergence drops the dome and the powers return to both Kyle and Hal. However the army of Electropolis attacks Kyle and Hal decides to destroy their citizens for revenge. This tie-in is great issue giving us back the memories of Hal as Parallax and the newly minted Green Lantern Kyle Rayner.

Convergence: Suicide Squad #1 begins as General Sam Lane asks Amanda Waller to reunite the Suicide Squad and take out the Kingdom Come heroes beginning with Green Lantern Alan Scott. Amanda Waller unites the deadliest villains including Bane, Black Manta, Deathstroke, and the Cyborg Superman. Meanwhile Barbara Gordon reaches out to Kingdom Come’s Lex Luthor to turn on the heroes of his own world and watch it burn. This is a surprise issue I never thought I would read until I saw the villains on the cover.

E75: Batman Eternal #48 | Earth 2 #32 | Green Lantern #40 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

Batman Eternal #48 someone contacts the Penguin to target James Gordon at Blackgate Prison. I riot breaks out at Blackgate giving Penguin a chance to get to Gordon. Meanwhile after crashing landing Batman steals a jet and heads towards Gotham as the Bat Family deal with souped-up villains. The big reveal of the villain behind Batman Eternal is expected to be in the upcoming fiftieth issue.

The heroes of Earth 2 hold the forces of Apokolips back as the Amazons and Avatars have fallen. The story continues and ends in Earth 2: World’s End as the series takes a two month break during the release of the Convergence series. The Earth 2 series could have been well spent these past six months by summarizing the events of the Earth 2: World’s End and giving the reader and additional story which corresponds to its sister weekly series.  What we got was a pointless six month substitute issues while the main events happened in the weekly Earth 2: World’s End.

Green Lantern #40 was marketed as Hal Jordan’s ultimate betrayal against the Templar Guardians and the Corps. The status quo will eventually reduce the number of Green Lantern-related titles to two: Green Lantern and Sinestro. Jordan wants to be the scapegoat for the Green Lanterns for all their recent ills and uses Krona’s Gauntlet to fight Kilowog and leave Mogo. The reasons for Jordan to do what he is doing are unclear and cryptic. I wish the writer put more meat into Jordan’s intentions and plans which would have given the issue more weight before the two month hiatus due to the Convergence series in April and May.

Green Lantern Annual #3 begins as Highfather plans to travel to Earth to make its population apart of his army against Darkseid. Sinestro opens a Boom Tube near the Source Wall to bring Hal Jordan as well as Black Hand’s army to New Genesis. However the entities from the Source Wall are alive since they were only imprisoned and not dead. They wreak havoc on New Genesis as the other Lanterns are freed and they join the battle against the New Gods. Kyle Rayner returns as the White Lantern and makes the Source Wall entities disappear. New Genesis falls out of the sky while Hal Jordan attempts to save it. Saint Walker returns as a Blue Lantern to triple the power of the Green Lanterns to save the people of New Genesis. Highfather sees the error of his ways and offers peace. E32: Green Lantern: New Guardians #37 | Justice League #37 | Wonder Woman #37 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

Green Lantern: New Guardians #37 opens with Metron giving Kyle and Carol a Motherbox to get off of Old Genesis. They reunite with John Stewart and Saint Walker on New Genesis. Together they battle Highfather to obtain the White Lantern Ring which no longer works. Now Highfather disposes them using the Life Equation. Each issue of GodHead has been a slow pace of putting all the pieces together as it leads to the final issue where all will be revealed.

Justice League #37 continues with Batman and Superman tracking down Patient Zero of the Amazo Virus. They are quickly joined by Wonder Woman who helps take Patient Zero down so Batman can get a sample of his blood. However he is knocked out by Patient Zero and Batman becomes exposed to the Amazo Virus. Meanwhile Lex Luthor is targeted by another assassin: Bullet.

Wonder Woman #37 begins with the Amazons being attacked by mechanical eagles as Wonder Woman is reminded of her neglected duties to the Amazons. Meanwhile Donna Troy enters into the New 52 Universe. Writer Meredith Finch ignores the event of last issue including the catastrophic event in Thailand and the destroyed clay statue of Wonder Woman’s mother. It leads to more questions as the issues progresses and ignores the events of the previous issue. It’s difficult to keep up with the story when it is so fragmented. Imagine reading various social media sites just to get one story. That’s what reading Wonder Woman was like by writer Meredith Finch. If this was the 90s then the great art could have saved the bad writing.

E29: Batman Eternal #36 | Green Lantern Corps #37 GodHead | World’s Finest #29 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

Batman Eternal #37 begins with the Batmobile destroyed and Commissioner Bard believing Batman was killed. However Batman survives and warns Bard to protect the city instead of going after him. Batman tries to put the pieces together of who is pulling the strings behind James Gordon, the train crash, the nanovirus, and converting Wayne Manor into Arkham Manor. Green Lantern Corps #37 finds the Rainbow Corps trapped on New Genesis as the Highfather attempts to convert them into his own warriors against Darkseid. John Stewart and Sinestro escape with the help from one of Highfather’s generals. Both Superman and Batman deal with a probe from Apokolips as well as the ally of Darkseid who terrorized Superman in the previous issue. There are three issues left before the end of the series and it seems the artist has given up.

Sinestro #7 is the final part of Act II of GodHead where Sinestro and the other Lantern Corps hide in the Anti-Matter Universe. John Stewart wants to use the Indigo Tribe to capture a New God and teleport them to the Anti-Matter Universe. Sinestro wants to convert one of the New Gods into a Yellow Lantern. Green Lantern: GodHead Volume 2 [2014]

The second Act of GodHead begins as Hal Jordan takes his Green Lantern Corps to Sinestro in Green Lantern #36. The New Guardians arrive to reveal Kyle Rayner is alive and imprisoned him. Hal believes the New Gods have all the rings except a Black Lantern. He searches for Black Hand on Earth and joins forces with him. One of the surprises within this issue is the resurrected Flying Graysons whose death led to their son Richard Grayson to become the first Robin.

The Sinestro Corps have taken the Green Lanterns to the Anti-Matter Universe where the Weaponeer forges new weapons against the New Gods in Green Lantern Corps #36. John Stewart on gathering the other rings beginning with the Star Sapphires. On Zamaron the New Gods attack the Star Sapphires until the Stewart arrives with reinforcements. The Corps are captured and a fallen Star Sapphire asks her ring to go to Stewart who becomes a Star Sapphire. The Corps are free and retreat to safety.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #36 begins as Highfather takes both Kyle and Carol to New Genesis where he separates the White Lantern ring from Kyle. Highfather plans on using the Life Equation to defeat Darkseid and remake the universe. Carol attacks using all of her power within her ring. Both Kyle and Carol are dumped on Old Genesis without the use of their rings. Meanwhile Highfather tests his Life Equation to make citizens on another planet into warriors.

GodHead continues picking up where the last issue of Red Lanterns left off. Guy Gardner and Simon Baz are determined to travel to New Genesis. They find Cyborg who reluctantly helps them get to New Genesis. Gardner and Baz arrive at the home of the New Gods who attacked them on Earth. After their short battle Highfather arrives and wants them both imprisoned and interrogated. I love this issue keeps continuity. After Highfather obtains the White Ring from Kyle in Green Lanterns: New Guardians, he makes a weapon to show his followers. The GodHead story has a nice flow that keeps moving along unlike the current Marvel Axis tie-ins.

E24: Red Lanterns #36 GodHead | Superman #36 | He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #19 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

Superman #36 begins as wants to take six million people to another dimension within 24 hours. Citizens gather to leave and aliens from the other dimension are ready to take them. Ulysses visits Klerik and his parents who he refuses to take. Superman arrives to find out what is really going on and the two battle it out. Ulysses reveals he has done this exodus before and a perfect world has a cost which Earth must pay for it. The problems I have with this issue is that there are no translations with the alien conversations. It seemed like blank pages of comics when the writer and artist do this and not allowing the readers to figure out what they are saying.

The final issue of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe has a stamp on the front that indicates this will be the Prelude to the Infinity War. However the issue takes place 12 years ago when Adam wants to become a Master but his father King Randor forbids it because he has not mastered himself. Adam is manipulated by his Uncle Keldor to prove his father wrong by venturing into the no-man’s land. Uncle Keldor asks Beast Man to take Adam hostage as he plans to poisoning the council and take over Eternia. King Randor searches for his son however his search comes under attack and is pinned down. Adam attempts to rescue his father as the Sorceress watches and grants him the strength to do so and promising to give his great power to save others. This is a fill-in issue as it doesn’t add any value as we approach the Eternity War in December.

E13: Green Lantern #36 GodHead | Earth 2 #28 World’s End Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

Earth #28 brings the origins of the Four Furies of Apokolips. On Czarnia the home planet of Lobo, the Fury of Pestilence is born and taken by Desaad. On Warworld the Fury of Famine is the champion for Mongul and taken by Steppenwolf. Starfire arrives on Apokolips and is trained by Big Barda to become the Fury of War. On Mars a mother who lost her child is taken by Darkseid and she will soon give birth to his child. She becomes the Fury of Death. Each of the Furies is introduced in this issue as they raise havoc on Earth 2: World’s End.
