Devil Comics Review | Superman [2017] The Oz Effect

Mr. Oz was introduced before the end of the New 52 and the beginning of Rebirth. He has imprisoned Doomsday, Tim Drake, and ripped Kryptonite from the heart of Metallo. Now the identity of Mr. Oz is revealed to be Superman’s father Jor-El who recounts his history of the last days of Krypton and the first few days of Earth. He is convinced Earth is empty of hope and wants to take Clark's family away. Oz makes himself known to both Lois and Jonathan while revealing to Superboy his future on another planet Bliss. He reveals an unstoppable threat is coming and nothing can prevent it. 

Oz takes Superman to a place outside of time and space where he discovers he imprisoned Mxyzptlk and Doomsday. Oz is taken away by an unknown force and realizes Earth may well be doomed in the future however Superman is determined to stop it.

Devil Comics Review | Superman – Action Comics [2017] The New World

Following the events of Superman Reborn, Clark Kent has a new continuity while Hank Henshaw is gathering Superman’s worst enemies to form the new Superman Revenge Squad. The Eradicator frees Mongul from his Black Mercy dream and travel to the Himalayan refuge with Blanque to retrieve the Oblivion Stone. 

Lois and Clark move back to Metropolis but Clark receives a message from his refuge and discovers the Oblivion Stone missing. On their moon base Henshaw reveals himself as the Cyborg Superman once the two halves of the Oblivion Stone is merged. Now the Revenge Squad is set to free Zod. 

Batman and Superman discover the Revenge Squad is trying to break into Belle Reve Penitentiary to free Zod who wants the Phantom Zone Projector to free his people. Superman enters the Black Vault which affects him negatively by making him blind after fighting the Cyborg-Superman, Eradicator, and Zod. The Revenge Squad heads towards the Fortress of Solitude to confront Superman as Supergirl, Super-Man, Superwoman, Steel, and Lex Luthor arrives to save him. 

Zod organizes his Revenge Squad to take on the Superman Defense Squad. He retrieves the Phantom Zone Projector and sends the Defense Squad into the Phantom Zone except for Supergirl. Zod also sends the Eradicator and Cyborg-Superman on a mission into the Phantom Zone to find his wife Ursa and his son Lor-Zod. 

Back on Earth Jonathan uses they Kryptonian armor to fight Zod along with Krypto. Ursa and Lor-Zod returns from the Phantom Zone along with Superman and the Eradicator. Zod retreats with his family while Superman brings his team back leaving the Cyborg Superman in the Phantom Zone. Zod travels to another planet to conquer to rebuild Krypton along with his family and the Eradicator.

Weekly Roundup | June 2017 Comic Solicitations

DC Solicitations DC Comics begins their summer event with Dark Days: The Forge written by Scott Snyder and art by Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and John Romita Jr. The Justice League believe Batman is holding a secret which could threaten the very existence of the multiverse. In July DC Comics will release Dark Days: The Casting and in August Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo team up with Batman Metal. 

Aquaman #25 has a new artist joining the team Stjephan Sejic who is known for Sunstone and Switch over at Image.

Action Comics #981 and #982 continues Revenge following Superman Reborn where General Zod unites Cyborg Superman, Eradicator, Mongul, Blanque, and Metallo into a new Superman Revenge Squad. The story is told under writer Dan Jurgens who was responsible for the Death of Superman back in 1992.

The selling point of these stories are the artists of the books. You have Lee Weeks (Daredevil) Mark Texeira (Ghost Rider) Tom Grummett (Superman) Kelley Jones (Batman) and Barry Kitson (Superman). Most likely this is an experiment similar to what is happening to Archie Comics where the cartoon versions are pushed aside for a more realistic version of the characters. 

Marvel Comics Solicitations Marvel Comics continues its summer event with Secret Empire and its 16 tie-ins. Before Spider-Man: Homecoming is released in July, Marvel releases Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man by Adam Kubert and Edge of Venomverse. Just before the Netflix Defender, Marvel releases the Defenders series under Brian Michael Bendis. The Ultimate Thor arrives in The Mighty Thor #20.

Archie Comics brings the 3-part Over the Edge where one of Riverdale's residents loses his or her life in Archie #20.

Valiant brings Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe #1 revealing the history of the Valiant universe from the past and into the future. Valiant is doing preorder set consisting of several issues of a series. They did it before with the first three issues of the new X-O Manowar series. Now they are doing it with X-O Manowar #4 through 9 and taking advantage of the advanced marketing that took place.  Now they are doing it with the new Secret Weapons series. This builds a partnership between the publishers and the retailers to create sustainability and value to the customers. . Valiant has put substantial premarketing into its series by establishing buy-in from the retailers and customers. Much like what Marvel is doing with its upcoming Secret Empire series.

Devil Comics Review | Superman Reborn [2017]

Steel brings Lana Lang Superwoman to the Fortress of Solitude while Dr. Hank Henshaw tracks them down. Superman arrives at the secret fortress in the Himalayas to find Steel carrying an injured Lana Lang who is Superwoman. Superman believes he understands what is happening and takes her to this world’s Fortress of Solitude while being pursued by Hank Henshaw. 

The other Clark Kent asks Lois Lane out on a date and she accepts so she can find out who he really is. After being rejected by Lois, Clark follows her home to discover she has a family with a son and a man who looks like him. Elsewhere Henshaw’s discovers the fortress in the Himalayas however one of his man releases the doors to the prisons within releasing Blanque.

Someone escapes Mr. Oz’s prison while the false Clark Kent gives the Kents a photo album of memories of the Kents. Superman and Lois discover everything erasing around them and Jon with it. Now Superman is determined to find the false Clark and get Jon back.

Superman and Lois hunt down Clark Kent who may have kidnapped their son Jonathan. They discover it was Mr. Mxyzptlk who pretended to be Clark Kent to protect Superman’s secret identity. He erases the memory of Jonathan Kent from the mind of his mother Lois Lane. Mxyzptlk was imprisoned by Mr. Oz so he escaped by saying his name backwards and became Clark Kent by brain washing himself. 

Jon is rescued by the New 52 Clark and Lois Lane however they have no memory of their son. The blue essence which arrives are the Pre-Flashpoint Superman and Lois who merges into the New 52 counterparts. The DC Universe is reborn again with aligned histories of Clark and Lois married with their son Jonathan.

Devil Comics Review | Superman – Action Comics [2016] Return to Metropolis

Following last year’s Truth storyline where Clark Kent was revealed as Superman to the world, a new Clark Kent arrives in Metropolis following Rebirth. After proving himself to Perry White with a lie detector test, Clark investigates Geneticron and gets thrown from the roof until Superman saves him. Superman confronts Clark Kent on his true identity and finds that he is who he says he is. The company Geneticron which Clark has been investigating and it was also responsible for Doomsday has disappeared.

The Post-Flashpoint Lois Lane returns to the Daily Planet so she can sign into the New 52 Lois’ computer. After meeting everyone at the Daily Planet including Clark and Lex Luthor, Lois heads to the other duplicate apartment where Superwoman confronts her. Superwoman reveals to Lois she is Lana Lang and the New 52 Lois left a final message to the Post-Flashpoint Lois to take her place in case she is gone.

Devil Comics Review | Superman – Action Comics [2016] Path of Doom

Action Comics returns to its original numbering after five years of the New 52. Geoff Johns has a plan where all the Rebirth stories line up to end around August 2018 when Action Comics #1000 is release. Writer Dan Jurgens takes over the title showcasing Lex Luthor, Doomsday, and a new Clark Kent in the first arc. 

Rehash Lex Luthor uses his armored suit with the Superman symbol to rescue hostages in Metropolis and declares himself as the new Superman. The Post-Crisis Clark Kent once again dons his Superman suit and heads towards Metropolis to confront Luthor. They both battle for Metropolis until Clark Kent arrives along with Doomsday. During the battle with Doomsday, Superman meets Clark and a gas explosion destroys part of Metropolis. Doomsday rises from the ashes and targets Clark.

Wonder Woman saves Clark while Superman takes on Doomsday who senses Jonathan Kent. Doomsday retreats to find Jonathan while Superman and Wonder Woman figure out where he went until they realize he can sense Kryptonians. Together they find Lois and Jonathan but Doomsday has also arrived. 

Superman take on Doomsday while Wonder Woman take Lois and Jonathan to the Watchtower in space. Mr. Oz sends in Black Zero to take care of Doomsday however they fail and Superman takes Doomsday to his Fortress of Solitude in the United States. He transports Doomsday into the Phantom Zone but Mr. Oz intercepts him and holds him for his own purposes.

Feedback Writer Dan Jurgens who killed Superman back in 1992 returns to give us the classic Superman we all know and love. The Path of Doom story arc brought back what was missing in the New 52 Superman.

Review | Superman - Action Comics: Hard Truth [2015] Greg Pak | Aaron Kuder

Action Comics #41 the events take place after Superman #41 but we get clues of what has happened so far. Superman lost his suit after the Fortress of Solitude locked him out, Lois exposed his identity to the world, and shadow creatures are attacking him as he heads back to his home in Metropolis. Now he deals with another shadow creature as the Metropolis police plan to burn down the block where Superman lived to remove any alien viruses. 

Action Comics #42 Superman takes on a shadow creature and blows it up. The Metropolis police plan to remove the citizens from the block by force however the residents have a sit down. As the police move in Superman arrives to block them off but the police beat him down until they cross the line and Superman fights back.

Action Comics #43 Superman punches a cop and discovers he is one of the shadows. Later on we discover the Mayor and City Hall are full of shadows and Superman and the cops are standing in their way.

Action Comics #44 The Mayor reveals herself as Wrath as the shadows take over the residents of the city. Superman fights back and the Wrath escapes to fight again.

Action Comics #45 Clark Kent assumes a new identity under Archie Clayton and goes after Wrath. He breaks into a secret facility however gets infected by Lee Lambert.

Action Comics #46 Superman is infected Lee Lambert however uses it to get the innocents out. Later Clark attempts to stop Wrath from using jets to infect citizens until he encounters Frankenstein.

Action Comics #47 we finally discover the origin of Wrath and how she took Vandal Savage’s offer to save herself. Clark embraces the shadows and stops the jets from infecting their targets. Vandal Savage takes the shadows and Black Mass back from Wrath. The Action Comics books are going downhill due to the lack of direction DC Comics has for Superman. Greg Pak is an awesome writer however he can’t save a franchise on his own.

The New 52 Futures End – Five Years Later Omnibus HC [2014]

DC Comics begins their annual September event with Futures End where all the titles jump in time 5 years later. Majority of the titles do not have the regular creative teams on the monthly titles as if they want to give the original teams a break for one month.

HIGHLIGHTS
Batman: Futures End sees Bruce break into Luthor’s facilities and faces off against Bizarro. Bruce has stolen the technology so he can clone himself so there will always be a Batman. 

Swamp Thing: Futures End gives a great overview of the world as it is divided into six kingdoms: Green, Red (Animalia), Black (Rot), Grey (Fungi), Divided (Bacteria), and Metal. He makes a deal with all the kingdoms before going up against the Avatar of the Rot, Anton Arcane. Alec Holland uses the White Ring to end the Rot. 

Green Arrow: Futures End takes the new Green Arrow Emiko Queen who is pitted against the Vertigo Cult. We are given clues that millions of refugees from another Earth has arrived following a war. Now Oliver Queen and the Outsiders want to free the superheroes of Earth 2 from their Cadmus prison. Green Arrow falls at the hands of Deathstroke during Futures End #1 however it was really Magus who helped Oliver faked his death while he goes after Camdus. 

Superman: Futures End #1 reveals why Shazam became the masked Superman and leading to the return of his true self by the end of the issue.

The Flash: Futures End #1 begins the debut of Wally West as the Flash taking on the future Flash. 

Sinestro: Futures End #1 begins on a prison planet where Sinestro is a prisoner with his ring finger missing. However an artificial missing finger is forged and Sinestro can wield the ring again. Sinestro heads back to where his corps fell on Necropolis and rebirths his corps into the new Black Lanterns.

Booster Gold: Futures End #1 sees Booster Gold bouncing throughout the multiverse. Meanwhile another version of Booster Gold is tortured into giving the location of Vanishing Point. The story will definitely continue in the DC Crisis event celebrating the 30th anniversary of Crisis of Infinite Earths.
