Devil Comics Review | Divinity III [2017] Stalinverse

During the second issue of Divinity II, Myshka went back in time to 1939 to help Stalin build the Soviet Union. Eventually Divinity stops her in the second series however something happened which created Stalinverse where Bloodshot, X-O, and Ninjak are on the side of the Russians. Myshka is the leader of the Heroes of the State a Russian super-powered death squad.

Divinity III begins with Colin King using Bloodshot, X-O Manowar, and Harbinger to enforce Soviet Union influence across the world. However Colin King is the only one who remembers the original reality. Now he is seeking Abram Adams AKA Divinity to restore the timeline but his wife and daughter are held prisoners by the Soviets while his counterpart Myshka and her Red Brigade expand Soviet influence in space.

We discover the third Cosmonaut Kazmir returned to Earth and things got confusing. Ninjak attempts to restore Divinity’s memories and defeats Komandar Bloodshot. Harada pays a visit to Colin King and together they visit Divinity to wake him up. Growing tired of the rebellion the Russian President orders Myshka to release Kazmir to finish them off

Weekly Roundup | June 2017 Comic Solicitations

DC Solicitations DC Comics begins their summer event with Dark Days: The Forge written by Scott Snyder and art by Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and John Romita Jr. The Justice League believe Batman is holding a secret which could threaten the very existence of the multiverse. In July DC Comics will release Dark Days: The Casting and in August Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo team up with Batman Metal.

Aquaman #25 has a new artist joining the team Stjephan Sejic who is known for Sunstone and Switch over at Image.

Action Comics #981 and #982 continues Revenge following Superman Reborn where General Zod unites Cyborg Superman, Eradicator, Mongul, Blanque, and Metallo into a new Superman Revenge Squad. The story is told under writer Dan Jurgens who was responsible for the Death of Superman back in 1992.

DC Universe and Looney Tunes Six One Shots
Batman/Elmer Fudd
Jonah Hex/Yosemite Sam
Legion of Super-Heroes/Bugs Bunny
Lobo/Road Runner
Martian Manhunter/Marvin the Martian
Wonder Woman/Tasmanian Devil

The selling point of these stories are the artists of the books. You have Lee Weeks (Daredevil) Mark Texeira (Ghost Rider) Tom Grummett (Superman) Kelley Jones (Batman) and Barry Kitson (Superman). Most likely this is an experiment similar to what is happening to Archie Comics where the cartoon versions are pushed aside for a more realistic version of the characters.

Marvel Comics Solicitations Marvel Comics continues its summer event with Secret Empire and its 16 tie-ins. Before Spider-Man: Homecoming is released in July, Marvel releases Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man by Adam Kubert and Edge of Venomverse. Just before the Netflix Defender, Marvel releases the Defenders series under Brian Michael Bendis. The Ultimate Thor arrives in The Mighty Thor #20.

Archie Comics brings the 3-part Over the Edge where one of Riverdale's residents loses his or her life in Archie #20.

Valiant brings Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe #1 revealing the history of the Valiant universe from the past and into the future. Valiant is doing preorder set consisting of several issues of a series. They did it before with the first three issues of the new X-O Manowar series. Now they are doing it with X-O Manowar #4 through 9 and taking advantage of the advanced marketing that took place.  Now they are doing it with the new Secret Weapons series. This builds a partnership between the publishers and the retailers to create sustainability and value to the customers. . Valiant has put substantial premarketing into its series by establishing buy-in from the retailers and customers. Much like what Marvel is doing with its upcoming Secret Empire series.

Devil Comics Review | Divinity III [2017] Heroes of the Glorious Stalinverse

In Komandar Bloodshot, Project Rising Spirit takes on both Project Rampage and Livewire before destroying the bunker where the rebels were residing. The origin of the Red Legend is told as a girl who obtained powers and was recruited by Myshka years later.

In Aric, Son of the Revolution, the X-O Manowar takes on the Deadside after their invasion on Red Square. Aric takes the fight back to their turf and faces Master Darque while delivering a payload from the Soviet Union. The origin of Kostiy, the Deathless begins as she was a general who touched a meteorite and became infected. She sheds her body once a month to become energy.

In Shadowman, Jack Boniface attempts to stop the Russians from invading New York however he is met with resistance from both Komandar, Bloodshot and Aric. He is defeated and captured by both of them who wants him to serve Russia.

In Escape from the Gulag 396, Archer is taken to prison and the warden wants him to talk to Armstrong to play nice with others. In exchange the warden will give him anything Archer wants. Archer succeeds and he wants Armstrong to be freed instead of himself.

Devil Comics Review | 4001 AD [2016]

The story follows the first twelve issues of the Rai series. New Japan is infected by a virus and Father is dropping sectors towards Earth to get rid of it. On Earth Rai and the Eternal Warrior use a giant X-O Manowar to get to New Japan and stop Father who transforms New Japan into a mechanical dragon to stop Rai. However Rai arrives on New Japan with the Eternal Warrior in tow. On New Japan the Geomancer and Lula decide to free the inmates within the prison so they can go up against Father and aid Rai and the Eternal Warrior. The overwhelming force allows Rai to face Father and defeat him but with the cost of New Japan falling apart towards Earth. Rai eventually defeats Father and New Japan is now on Earth.

When you have a title called 4001 AD the audience is aware by the end it will move forward to the next year. The title like Green Lantern would eventually have other color rings however the writer Geoff Johns tied the story to the mythology of the character. There is no mythology or history to Rai which is prominent to the character. The tie-ins add backstory however it is only limited to its own continuity and does not tie directly into the 4001 AD series.

Devil Comics Review | Rai [2016] 4001 AD

In the year 3001, New Japan is plagued with over-population, disease, and famine. Father creates Rai to inspire New Japan. The first Rai was killed off by citizens of New Japan that did not want the technological advances from the Father. The story arc will focus on the origins of the Father, New Japan, and Rai. Another Rai named Sai who is female for another generation prevents mass suicide and Father replaces her as the Positron rises up against New Japan. Father sends his new Rai Aboto to execute everyone and removes the sector from New Japan as both the new Rai and Sai watches.

Aboto is sent to Earth to destroy New Japan’s enemies before returning to New Japan and killing Sai. She convinces him he is more than what Father wants him to be so they stay together until Father finds them. Father sends Sai to Earth while Aboto attacks Father before being defeated. Sai is pregnant with Aboto’s child while Father finds a new Mother for the next Rai. The current Rai confronts and defeats Aboto while his mother dies prematurely after being kidnapped from Father. The arc ends as the Rai series begins.

4001 A.D. [2016] X-O Manowar #1 After Father takes New Japan into orbit causing tremors across the world, the nations assemble a response in the form of the X-O Manowar armor. Nations around the world send their own X-O Manowars to attack Japan. Everyone was launched except for the United States because their systems are attacked from within. The various X-O Manowars are defeated leaving the United States to rot in its silo until 4001 AD. Overall this was a short prelude story of the X-O Manowar before the events of 4001 AD.

4001 A.D. [2016] Bloodshot #1 The issue is a follow up to last year’s Book of Death: The Fall of Bloodshot, where Bloodshot emerges to complete his final mission, which is to bury his original physical body Ray Garrison.

4001 A.D. [2016] Shadowman #1 The issue introduces Kaia who will become the Shadow Woman of 4001. Gethsemane the living city offers live sacrifices for the Sanctuary the last outpost of the Deadside War. Now the citizens of Gethsemane have decided to steal the power from the Sanctuary for themselves. Kaia steals the totem however New Japan fragments falls unto the Sanctuary. The citizens of Gethsemane invade the Sanctuary while Kaia and her friends defend with the Loa Shadow Women it after finding out the truth. The truce between the two cities holds as the humans obtain the skull of Master Darque.

4001 A.D. [2016] War Mother #1 A new Valiant character is introduced within this one shot. Ana the War Mother and her gun called Flaco searches for technology which fell from New Japan and bring it back to the Grove. She finds a child and brings him back to the Grove however the laws prohibit it. Ana fights to bring him into the Grove and encourages others to evolve. This was an over-hyped issue which was classified.

Devil Comics Review | Divinity II [2016] Matt Kindt | Trevor Hairsine

After Abram Adams accepts the powers of the Unknown and returns to Earth, the other two Russian Cosmonauts attempt to find a way home. However it is Valentina Volkov AKA Myshka who sacrifices her partner and accepts the power of the Unknown to return home to Earth. The Unity Squad sends in Abram Adams AKA Divinity to confront Myshka.  She destroys Divinity and travels into the past to 1939 Moscow to build Stalinverse. However Divinity changes everything back. Overall this is a boring storyline where everything is back to status quo at the end of the story arc.

Review | Rai: The Orphan [2015] Matt Kindt | Clayton Crain

Lula has freed the Geomancer Karana from captivity and revealed Father kept her captive so no one will rise against New Japan from Earth. Spylocke is held by the new Rai now called X-Eye. Spylocke is using old videos to give instructions to his acolytes including a reward for killing Silk who has betrayed both Spylocke and Rai. After Rai fell to Earth he realizes he is not healing because he is not connected to New Japan and is shot by the natives of Earth.

Now Rai is on a journey to find an island with a warrior who cannot die. They find the beheaded Ax who is prepared to self-destruct. Rai continues his search for the Eternal Warrior until he finally finds him. Rai needs his help to rescue a Geomancer which the Eternal Warrior agrees to kill Father and let New Japan fall. Spylocke puts in the code to kill New Japan and it falls onto the Earth.

The series does not conclude here however lets into next year's 2016 summer event 4001 AD. The series seems like a cheat as it builds towards something else instead of giving the audience closure.

Now an asteroid is heading towards Earth which contains an element the Prometheans need. Neela decides the only way to stop the Mistress is to kill herself however she is saved by the Prometheans. She becomes the Mistress who is the person she was supposed to stop in the first place.

Ivar discovers the Prometheans are mass producing Neela as the Mistress to destroy him. The real Neela reveals herself explaining the Prometheans put implants into the Neela clones to hate Ivar and to serve their purposes. Neela discovers the only way to save the universe is to sacrifice her relationship with Ivar. At the end Neela becomes the new Timewalker while Ivar is imprisoned in Time Jail. The final issue is incredible and did not expect the ending which gave the series absolute closure as well as continuation.

Ninjak #6 begins as Ninjak hunts the Shadow Seven as he takes over as CEO of the criminal empire the Weaponeer. First of his list is La Barbe and heads to the South of France to find him and send him to MI-6. Ninjak #7 The next target of the Shadow Seven is Sanguine and Ninjak takes her down and sends her to Neville Alcott who reveals one of the Shadow Seven is linked to a nuke through a dead-man’s switch.

Ninjak #8 Colin King continues with his next target Fitzy of the Shadow Seven. We discover he is a clone created by Dr. Silk and rose to the ranks of the Shadow Seven. Fitzy destroyed Dr. Silk’s clones and Ninjak knocks him out and takes him back. The story could have been told better but we have a complete conclusion to the story arc which began in the first issue.

Review: Valiant Book of Death [2015] Robert Venditti | Doug Braithwaite

The Book of Death is the sequel to The Valiant, where the Immortal Enemy killed the modern day Geomancer while the future Eternal Warrior sends one back through time. Now the Eternal Warrior is protecting Tama who is a Geomancer from the future. She has a book which foretells the destiny of the Valiant characters. David is the current Geomancer who is corrupted by Master Darque.

Both the Eternal Warrior and Tama are overwhelmed when insects assault them however the Unity team arrives to save them however they were sent to retrieve Tama. The Unity Squad believes Tama is responsible for the disasters killing thousands and the Eternal Warrior tells them that they are being hunted and they are causing the disasters. However the Eternal Warrior successfully defends himself against the members of the Unity Squad and escapes while Master Darque pursues him with his own Geomancer.

Tama finally defeats Master Darque and the Eternal Warrior is killed. This series would have been better as a weekly series rather than a monthly story told a piece at a time. Overall the series was a set up for Wrath of the Eternal Warrior as he is in Hell and finding his way back to the land of the living.

Review: Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer [2015] Fred Van Lente

The story features the first Geomancer Anni and Padda who head to find a tree with a special fruit. Anni consumes the fruit and is consumed by the Earth as a giant approaches Padda. The Earth is awakening the giants because she is scared however the Geomancer Anni destroys them. Padda leaves believing Anni is a witch after she destroyed the giants and pregnant through the Earth. The descendants of the Padda clan gives rise to Armstrong, Gilad, and Ivar.

The finale of the Legends of the Geomancer sees Padda return after decades. While the Geomancer spoke to the one of the halves of the two minds of Earth, the other mind spoke to Padda and we witness the early beginnings of what will fuel Master Darque.

There is very little story within these issues. For a book titled Legends, I expected more stories, timelines of events, and characters leading up to and to the future of the Valiant Universe. These issues were only available in limited quantities through the retailers however the premium pricing does not justify the stories within. The Legends of the Geomancer gave us the both the protector of Earth (Geomancer) and the destroyer (Master Darque) in a never ending cycle.

Review: Book of Death: The Fall of X-O Manowar #1 [2015]

After the fall of X-O Manowar, Commander Trill plans on striking against the false X-O Manowar by stealing the remains of Aric. During the final days of Aric, the armor is passed on to his daughter Jhukka. Now Trill faces Jhukka and reveals Aric became one with the armor. She tells Trill that Aric became who he was because of him. Overall a quiet issue but worthy of praise as it gives us a clear understanding of who Aric was and who he became.

Review: Book of Death: The Fall of Harbinger #1 [2015] Joshua Dysart | Kano

The Bleeding Monk warned Toyo Harada that Peter Stanchek was destined to be the Great Destroyer. Peter formed the Renegades to bring down Harada’s empire. Peter went into hiding and Harada waged war to realize his vision of imposing world peace at the end of sword. In the year 2183 Peter is the President of the Harbinger Foundation and the Bleeding Monk warns him that Harada is returning to Earth more powerful than ever before he bled to death.

Harada returns to Earth and his mind is dumped into Peter’s to become a Singular Omega. The issue was a painful read as we are given the experience of what is happening in the mind of Peter and less on the consequences of his actions. It becomes rather confusing at times with a predictable ending. The story began with the death of the Bleeding Monk and ends with the birth of a new Bleeding Monk with no explanation of how it happened giving the readers a story without closure.

Archer & Armstrong: The One Percent and Other Tales [2015] Fred Van Lente

Mary Maria joined the Sisters of Perpetual Darkness and her current mission is to take down a loan shark in Brazil called the Octopus. The origin of Archer is revealed as he is kidnapped by Project Rising Spirit. His memories are erased at Project Rising Spirit before he is taken to Archer Ministries and trained as an assassin. His target is Armstrong.

The One Percent takes center stage as they in war with other Sects. However the children of the One Percent take over and become the New One Percent.

Book of Death: The Fall of Ninjak #1 [2015] Matt Kindt | Trevor Hairsine

The issue begins following the Second Armor Hunters War where Unity was personally attacked with nukes. A positron model of Livewire created by Harada visits Ninjak. We are given a story of the past were Doctor Silk clones destroyed half of Japan attempting to find the original Silk. The Livewire positron used the original DNA of Amanda to create a sentient self-replicating artificial intelligence called Livewire to rebuild Japan and launch it into space. However Ninjak believes New Japan will become a parasite pulling resources from Earth and vows to stop her. Ninjak uses his students the Spylockes and Gin-Gr however ultimately fails. We see Ninjak fall to Earth reflecting on the title of the book The Fall of Ninjak. Towards the middle we are given a brief history of Ninjak and the Eternal Warrior which doesn’t make an impact on the overall story. We are given glimpses of the future with the Harbinger Trials and Aric. Their futures will be told in their own Book of Death issues. The problem I have with this issue is that it focuses on the origins of the world of New Japan and less on Ninjak himself. Fans of Rai would love this story however the issue falls flat as it is not standalone but is interconnected with the other books.

Ivar and his brothers arrive at Oblivi-1 which orbits a massive black hole. Ivar finds Neela and confronts her future self. Ivar and the future Neela disappear in hellfire as Armstrong and the Eternal Warrior rescue Neela and escape.
