Devil Comics Review | Thor [2017] Ragnarok

After the Age of Ultron, Thor decides to investigate the Infinity Stones which leads him to the events of Ragnarok. The movie introduces Asgardian goddess queen Hela who is rule of the realm of the dead. In the original Infinity Gauntlet story back in 1991, Thanos assembled the Infinity Gems to wipe out half the universe for his beloved Death. We can assume the same will happen in the Infinity War when Thanos assembles the Infinity Gems to wipe out the universe for his beloved Hela. The synopsis for Ragnarok involves Thor losing his hammer and is pitted against the Hulk in a gladiatorial fight before he returns to Asgard to stop Ragnarok which is the destruction of Asgardian civilization at the hands of Hela.

Devil Comics Review | Marvel Legacy #1 [2017]

The Avengers of One Million BC unite to fend Earth against a Celestial which later rises in the present with Loki. Robbie Reyes has visions of the past and ends up in Cape Town, South Africa until he faces Starbrand who wants something ancient to stay buried and will kill anyone to tries to unearth it. In Jotunheim Loki gathers the Frost Giants to steal something from a Shield storage facility on Midgard. The Avengers stop them however one of the Frost Giants steals the crate and ends up facing a resurrected Wolverine.

DC Comics begins its July Solicitations with Dark Days: The Casting follows The Forge in June leading to August’s Dark Nights: Metal and its spin-off Dark Matter. DC Comics’ Dark Matter which is an artist-centric approach series drawn by today’s best artists including Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and John Romita Jr. who also drawn The Forge and The Casting. The first appearance of the characters in Dark Matter could be in both the Forge and the Casting.

Marvel Comics begins its July Solicitations with Secret Empire while also promoting the 10 issue maxi series Generations for August and September. Clearly DC has a better publishing strategy because it focuses on new ideas rather than consolidating old ones. Marvel Comics Pull List: Secret Empire Last mega event till 2019.

In 2016 IDW Publishing released Revolution which brought various Hasbro properties together including Transformers, G.I Joe, and MASK. They are competing with both DC and Marvel which also have shared universes. The purpose of a shared universe is basically multiplying and maximize sales towards the target audience. One reader would buy two books within a shared universe to complete the story rather than one.

Devil Comics Review | The Mighty Thor [2016] Lords of Midgard

Malekith controls Alfheim as well as its resources after marrying the Queen of the Light Elves through spells of the Enchantress. Loki stabbed the All-Mother as Odinson is captured in a vessel with Asgard with the Ultimate Thor’s Hammer near him. Dario Agger the CEO of Roxxon needs allies against his allies Malekith so Loki offers to help by telling the story of a Viking named Bodolf the Black. Bodolf prayed to the God of Thunder Thor until the day he didn't and Thor switched sides. Loki comes to Bodolf and asks him to slay a dragon and drink his blood which turns him into a Hulk. In the present Loki directs Roxxon to a cave to slay a dragon and drinks its blood creating an army of Hulks for Roxxon. 

Jane Foster gets interviewed by SHIELD in regards to Thor's identity while a secret corporate summit removes Dario Agger as CEO of Roxxon. The Silver Samurai destroys Roxxon's ice base and takes on Thor and SHIELD Agent Roz Solomon who discovers the Agger Imperative which is to weaponize Roxxon Island in the event of a hostile takeover aimed at Manhattan. Now Thor has to rescue Agger before Manhattan is destroyed but SHIELD deduced her identity as Jane Foster. During the battle to rescue Agger, Thor is poisoned by a bullet as she is surrounded by SHIELD agents. The Rainbow Bridge opens and Dr. Jane Foster offers her help Thor. The Roxxon Island is turned into gold and Thor throws it into the sun. Later Thor reveals her identity to Roz Solomon and the second Jane Foster is revealed to be Mjolnir.

Devil Comics Review | The Mighty Thor: Thunder in Her Veins [2016] Jason Aaron

The first issue of Thor begins after we discover the identity of the new Thor is Doctor Jane Foster who is suffering from terminal cancer. Every time she turns into Thor, the transformation neutralizes the effects of the chemotherapy and purges it from her body but not the cancer which is killing her. Now she confronts a war between the light and dark elves which could eventually lead to the war of the realms.

On Asgardia the Congress of Worlds convene to discuss the death of the light elves however like all democratic systems it fails to reach a resolution. Jane visits the All-Mother who is imprisoned and we discover Odinson does not want to be found. Thor attempts to use the Rainbow Bridge but she is quickly detained by Cul who plans to arrest her. In the Yawning Void, Malekith convenes the Dark Council to discuss the murder of the light elves and the involvement of Thor. Malekith has a solution in the form of Loki who wants to join the Dark Council in exchange for murdering Thor.

The first issue of the new Thor is incredible as it lays out a long-term plan including a war of the realms and how the politics of Congress of Worlds and the Dark Council play against one another. Jason Aaron has built his legacy as one of the top Thor writers following Walt Simonson. Odinson is missing however we have a clue following the Secret Wars tie-in Thors on how he will become worthy. At the end of Thors, the Ultimate Thor’s hammer falls on Old Asgard and lays there until someone worthy picks it up.

Loki confronts his father who tricks him into confronting his best Frost Giants while Thor takes on the Thunder Guard. Thor is saved by Heimdall who transports her to Alfheim where Roxxon tanks and the Dark Elves are destroying the Light Elves. Loki who wants to join the Dark Council proves himself to his father by taking down his greatest warriors. Malekith will be the king of all elves so he marches to the Light Elf capital as Thor stands guard.

Loki confronts Thor as Malekith bombs the capital of the Light Elves. The capital is saved by Thor and Malekith using the Enchantress manipulates the Queen of the Light Elves to marry him. Back on Asgardia, Odin holds a trial for the All-Mother Freyja for treason which Thor interrupts by battling the All-Father.

Malekith marries the queen of the Light Elves and throws her into a cell as he claims the Realm of Alfheim. The All-Mother reveals Loki is a spy on Malekith’s Dark Council as Cul and his Thunder Guard storm the throne room. However Loki betrays and kills the All-Mother which stops the Civil War in Asgard. Elsewhere Odinson is imprisoned on Asgard with the Ultimate Thor Hammer lying on the ground. The conclusion of Secret Wars Thors series pays off at the end of the issue as it paves the return of the original Thor just in time for his movie next year. Overall a great first arc as the series most likely will end with the twenty-fifth issue which will be the same time as Thor: Ragnarok.

Review | Thors [2015] Jason Aaron | Chris Sprouse

Thors begins with five murders over five different kingdoms and time is running out. If they do not solve these murders then Doom will take interest which will mean stripping the Thors of their hammers. The Thors discover that they are all the same woman. Beta Ray Bill asks a homeless man for help who reveals himself as Loki. Ray discovers the identity of the five victims Jane Foster however he is injured before he could reveal the killer. 

The second issue of Thors sees the funeral for Beta Ray Bill and the Thors vow vengeance by tracking down every lead they could find including repeat offenders. The Ultimate Thor tracks down Jane Foster who has been taken by another Mighty Thor. Now another victim falls prey in the form of Donald Blake as the Ultimate Thor tracks down their first suspect Loki.

The third issue of Thors sees Loki being interrogated by the Ultimate Thor. Loki reveals there are more bodies so Ultimate Thor heads to the Deadlands to find the bodies however he is ambushed by Rune and Destroyer Thor. He is left for dead until he is rescued by the Unworthy Thor.

The finale of Thors begins with Rune and Destroyer Thors about to kill Loki until the Ultimate and Unworthy Thors arrive to arrest them. The Rune and Destroyer Thors killed the Jane Foresters and Donald Blake to preserve a lie. The Jane Forester Thor reveals Thor is not the All-Father and rallies the other Thors against Doom. 

The Rune Thor loses his ability to lift the hammer by becoming unworthy. The Unworthy Thor passes by and looks down on it and says “Maybe, Next Time.” This line gave reference to the 2008 Iron Man film where James Rhodes says a similar line when look at the Iron Man armor. The Ultimate Thor falls while battling Doom and throws his hammer and lands in Old Asgard. The conclusion of the Thors is a book worth reading and collecting if you are a Thor fan and currently reading the new series to find out what happens next. Writer Jason Aaron brought closure to the series while building towards the next chapter.

Thor Volume 2: Who Holds the Hammer? [2014-2015] by Jason Aaron | Russell Dauterman

Thor #6 begins the second arc as Thor attempts to track down the identity of the new Thor. First he visits Jane Foster who is healing from cancer in Asgardia and then SHIELD to track down Rosalind Solomon who is currently at Roxxon at the same time as the new Thor. Meanwhile Odin sends in the Destroyer against the new Thor. Thor #7 shows Cul the brother of Odin animating the Destroyer armor against the new Thor. Now she faces the Destroyer alone until Thor shows up with his mother and powerful women including Lady Sif, Angela, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Captain Marvel. Thor #8 sees Odinson and his friends uniting to save Thor from the Destroyer. Odin finally calls off his brother Cul the Destroyer as Odinson confronts Thor on her true identity. In Jotunheim Malekith resurrects King Laufey. The finally pages reveals the identity of the new Thor which fits into the Marvel mythos.

Thor Annual #1 contains three stories beginning with King Thor and his daughters who find the perfect gift for their father. They create a new Eden and Thor makes two humans to rule over the land. The story sees Thor truly become a God. The next story sees the Warriors Three test the new Thor through a series of tasks. The finally story sees a young Thor in a drinking game with Mephisto.

Angela: Asgard's Assassin Volume 1: Priceless [2015] by Phil Jimenez | Stephanie Hans

Angela: Asgard’s Assassin begins as she kidnaps the heir of Asgard and travels to Limbo We get a brief story about her background in the introduction and her actions within the story of how she settles her debts. For a new character to launch her own series this was a poor attempt to create interest as some of the issues were not addressed. It would have been nice to see things from her point of view instead of someone else narrating her story. 

The second issue of Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #2 begins as the backstory of how Angela stole her sister from her parents. She escapes to Midgard where we learn Angela is a dealmaker and keeps the rules of Heven. She kidnapped her own sister to bring to the Angels of Heven as payment for what she owes them. As Thor and the other Asgardians are in pursuit, Angela heads to the world of the Dark Elves to find the solution to stop their pursuit. This is a much better story than the first issue as it explains more about Angela’s intentions for the kidnapping. 

Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #3 finds herself on the run with her baby sister from Odinson and the other Asgardians. She travels to Vanaheim where they discover the ruins of a temple where marriages to place. Sera tells Angela to go beneath the temple to find an armored wedding dress that only the pure of heart could wear. She later hooks up with the Guardians of the Galaxy as Odinson and Loki travel to Hel to ask their Queen Hela for help. She dispatches hunters to track down Angela and Odinson asks he needs her alive however without the use of her legs. 

Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #4 Odinson had called reinforcements, Hela’s Valkrie tribe the Disir to stops Angela. However Angela has the Guardians of the Galaxy beside her to help her defeat the Disir. Angela reveals her kidnapped sister has the power of Surtur inside and only Heven can save her. Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #5 Odinson tracks her sister Angela to Heven and discovers why she kidnapped their sister. Odinson understands and Angela throws her sister into Heven’s furnace. Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #6 begins with Angela tossing her sister into the depths of Heven’s furnace where she restarts it and saves her sister. She has repaid her debts to Heven for raising her and to Asgard by removing the power of Surtur from her sister. Afterwards Angela confronts Sera who is really Malekith in disguise. He reveals how the All-Mother cursed the angels to Hel and Sera is there too. Angela plans to go to Hel to save her Sera. The final issue really brings the first arc to a respectable close after a rough start at the beginning.

Amazing Spider-Man #16 begins as Peter Parker believes he can run a company after leading an army in Spider-Verse. As Alchemax and Parker Industries compete to build a super prison, Tiberius Stone and Mark Raxton the Molten Man hires Ghost to put Parker Industries out of business. The series ends with issue #18 as Secret Wars begins and Dan Slott brings Peter and Mary Jane together one final time in Renew Your Vows.

Superior Iron Man #6 begins the second arc as Tony faces Pepper and her secret weapon against him. After taking control of Resilent, Pepper sends a retro vision of the Iron Man armor against Tony.

Thor #6 begins the second arc as Thor attempts to track down the identity of the new Thor. First he visits Jane Foster who is healing from cancer in Asgardia and then SHIELD to track down Rosalind Solomon who is currently at Roxxon at the same time as the new Thor. Meanwhile Odin sends in the Destroyer against the new Thor.

Wolverines #9 sees Fang telling a Frost Giant that Daken is his father leading to an uncomfortable confrontation. Daken finally takes on the Frost Giant before Fang pulls him back and they both grab a beer. Fang realizes that Daken has one arm to open his beer so he heals him with a new arm and eye. After having a heart to heart Fang takes away Daken’s arm and eye and making sure the enemies of Wolverine suffer. Now Fang takes Sabretooth away into space.

E72: All-New X-Men #38 Black Vortex | Wolverines #8 | Thor Annual #1 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

All-New X-Men #38 begins with the Black Vortex powered Beast, Angel, and Gamora planning on remaking the universe in their image until Ronan the Accuser arrives on the scene and takes the Black Vortex. Meanwhile the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy survive the attack by Mr. Knife and escape as Beast, Angel, and Gamora attack the Kree homeworld of Hala. While escaping the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy conveniently bumps into Cyclops. 

Wolverines #8 begins as Fang of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard arrives from deep space to avenge his friend Logan. The Wolverines do their best to take out Fang who just wants to have a good time. Fang takes Daken to the Mountains of Jotunheim and the home of the Frost Giants. 

Thor Annual #1 contains three stories beginning with King Thor and his daughters who find the perfect gift for their father. They create a new Eden and Thor makes two humans to rule over the land. E63: Thor #5 | Wolverines #6 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

Thor #5 Back on Earth, Thor takes on the both the Absorbing Man and Titania and breaks their jaws. The All-Mother gives the new Thor encouragement as the All-Father Odin wants the Hammer back and plans on sending the destroyer after the new Thor.

Wolverines #6 sees the Amazing X-Men and the Wolverines competing for the statue of Wolverine as Nero makes a deal with Sinister. Nero uses the control words on the Wolverines to give Sinister a chance to defeat the X-Men. However the Wolverines take out their own ear drums to prevent them from being controlled. Nightcrawler manages to obtain the Wolverine statue and get away as Sinister is defeated. But Sinister had a contingency plan to resurrect himself from his defeat.
