Devil Comics Review | Star Trek Discovery [2019] Season 2

The cliffhanger for season one ends with the USS Discovery facing the USS Enterprise. Captain Pike assumes command of the Enterprise and leads a mission to rescue a medical transport on an asteroid. Michael Burnham briefly sees a red winged angel before being saved by Captain Pike. Spock is currently at a medical facility and a new threat emerges to destroy everything. 

Now known as the Red Angel, the Discovery searches for Spock. The crew of the Discovery find out the Red Angel is a humanoid from the future wearing and enhanced armor. Michael finds her brother Spock and the two head to Talos IV (Which is the planet from 'The Cage' episode from the original Star Trek series). 

We discover the Red Angel is Michael's mother from the future attempting to circumvent a disaster created by Section 31. Discovery took the knowledge which would be used to created the disaster into the future to prevent it. 

Devil Comics Review | Star Trek Discovery [2017] Season 1

Taking place ten years before the adventures of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, a fractured Klingon Empire is attempting to unite under T’Kuvma. First Officer Michael Burnham of the USS Shenzhou find T’Kuvma flagship the Sarcophagus, the Ship of the Dead, floating in space. A battle erupts between the Federation and the Klingons which is used to unite the Klingon Empire. T’Kuvma is killed and Voq the Torchbearer and L’Rell encouraged the Klingon High Council to carry out the vision of T’Kuvma and unite against the Federation. However Voq is left stranded on the USS Shenzhou as Kol unites the Klingon Empire. L’Rell rescues Voq and board a raider ship so he can reach the matriarchs.

After the battle Michael Burnham is sentenced to prison for treason and beginning the war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. She is recruited by Captain Gabriel Lorca of the USS Discovery which has a spore jump drive to teleport them anywhere in the quadrant. The Klingons discover their new technology and kidnap Lorca who is imprisoned with Lieutenant Ash Tyler and the intergalactic criminal Harry Mudd. Lorca and Tyler escape from the Klingon prison and unite with the Discovery. Later Lorca makes Tyler his Chief Security Officer. The mid-season finale ends with the Discovery destroying the Sarcophagus and the spore jump drive takes the Discovery where no one has gone before to the Mirror Universe. 

The Discovery disguises itself as a Terran ship from the Mirror Universe where they meet the Emperor of the Terran Empire Phillipa Georgiou. During the encounter Ash Tyler is revealed to be the Klingon Voq and Captain Lorca is revealed as a Mirror Universe counterpart who planned to return to the Mirror Universe with Michael Burnham to defeat the Emperor. However Michael choses to side with Phillipa Georgiou and together they return to their universe eight months later only to find the Klingons have almost defeated the Federation. 

Out of desperation the remains of the Federation put the former Emperor Phillipa Georgiou as Captain of the Discovery because she defeated the Klingon Empire in the Mirror Universe. The Discovery travels to the Klingon Homeworld to destroy it so the Klingons will retreat back but peace prevails. Michael is back as a Starfleet officer after saving the Federation from the Klingons while a distress call from Captain Pike of the USS Enterprise is received. Season 2 will explore why Spock does not mention having an adopted sister.

Review | Star Trek - Green Lantern: The Spectrum War [2015]

The first issue begins as Ganthet escapes to another universe from Black Hand with various Lantern rings after the death of Green Lantern Mogo. In another universe, the crew of the starship Enterprise discovers the corpse of Ganthet and various Lantern rings and bring them back to the ship. The Klingon General Chang arrives to capture Kirk and his crew to bring them back to the Planet Kronos. The Lantern rings become active and search for suitable hosts with Chang becoming part of the Sinestro Crops, Chekov becomes a Blue Lantern, Uhura becomes a Star Sapphire, and McCoy becomes part of the Indigo Tribe. Green Lantern Hal Jordan arrives requesting an answer as to why Ganthet’s remains are on the Enterprise.

The second issues see the newest member of Sinestro Corps General Chang attacking the Enterprise as a new Red Lantern and Orange Lantern are chosen. Hal Jordan defends the Enterprise while Blue Lantern Chekov uses his power to escape Chang who returns to his homeworld and murder his superiors. However now Chang faces his new superior Sinestro who arrives on Kronos.

The third issue reveals how Ganthet escaped to the Star Trek Universe using the combine power of the rings to rip space-time. Hal Jordan explains to Kirk how the DC Universe ended with Nekron. However the leaders of the other Lanterns escaped as well during the Last Light. On Gornar a Red Lantern is visited by Atrocitus while on Romulus Larfleeze makes a visit to the new ring bearer. On the Kronos Sinestro educates a new member as Saint Walker and Carol Ferris of the Star Sapphires are in the new universe. They reveal Nekron also made it through during the Last Light and building a Black Lantern army on the ashes of Vulcan.

The fourth issue flashbacks on how Nekron took over the universe by destroying the central batteries and killing the White Lantern Kyle Rayner. In the present a starbase is attacked by the Red Lanterns as Sinestro and the Klingons arrive along with Hal Jordan and the Enterprise. Sinestro takes out the crew of the Enterprise and Hal Jordan assumes control to strike back as the dead rises from the ashes of destroyed Vulcan homeworld. 

The fifth issue sees the eruption of the War of the Light in the Star Trek Universe as John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kilowog arrives to save Jordan. Kirk and Spock discover the Planet Vulcan has returned and informs Jordan so has Nekron. The remaining Green Lantern Corps capture Sinestro and imprison him on the Enterprise while Scotty manufactures a White Lantern Ring. The Enterprise heads towards Vulcan where the Green Lanterns and the crew face Nekron and his Vulcan Black Lanterns. 

The finale sees the Green Lanterns and the crew of the Enterprise take on Nekron and his Vulcan Black Lanterns. Kirk takes McCoys ring and puts it on Spock which brings the other Lantern rings to him except for a Green Lantern ring. The Green Lantern Corps focuses their energies onto Spock which rebirths the Life Entity. Nekron is destroyed by the Life Entity and the Planet Vulcan dies again. The aftermath sees the Green Lanterns incorporated into the Star Trek Universe while Star Fleet issues force-field rings to each cadet. This crossover was very well put together and opens up a possible sequel with the newly formed universe consisting of both DC and Star Trek characters.

Star Trek | Planet of the Apes: The Primate Directive [2015]

Star Trek crosses over with the Planet of the Apes franchises in the Primate Directive. The Klingons have found a way to travel to other dimensions to a different universe on a future Earth where Apes and Klingons are working together. The majority of this issue is a set up for the set of the series and this issue has no interaction between the crew of the Enterprise and the Planet of the Apes. It would have been acceptable if the narrative was told in a Starlog where Kirk explains the situation and immediately arrives on the Planet of the Apes where the action takes place. 

The second issue of Star Trek/Planet of the Apes brings the crew of the Enterprise in contact with Colonel George Taylor who wants to use Kirk’s crew and ship to overthrow the apes. Kirk refuses but Taylor has other plans as he takes Chekov’s communicator and runs off into the woods. The second issue picks up the pace however the ending falls flat as the reader is asked “What can Taylor do with a communicator?” Taylor takes Chekov’s communicator and boards the Enterprise as Kirk follows and confronts him. They come to a mutual agreement as the Ape General Marius and the Klingon Kor work together to bring the Planet of the Apes into the Klingon Empire.

Kirk and Taylor return to Earth to discover a civil war between the apes is about to begin. Dr. Zira warns her fellow people the gorillas are launching an attack to claim dominance over them. However Kor is using a sniper rifle to start the civil war himself but Kirk and Taylor stop him. Civil war is averted and Kirk and his crew leave the Planet of the Apes. Kirk is chasing Kor’s ship who is heading towards the portal until Earth’s atmosphere is consumed by a Doomsday device as the events unfold from Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Thanks to the interference of the Enterprise crew, the events of Escape of the Planet of the Apes unfold revealing how they managed to slingshot back in time. The first 4 issues of the crossover was less exciting but the final issue gave us the pay off the readers needed.

E49: G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes: Agent of Cobra #1 | Star Trek / Planet of the Apes #2 | The Transformers: Punishment Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

The new Snake Eyes limited series sees one of our favorite G.I. Joe characters working for Cobra. Snake Eyes returns after being presumed dead and rescues Destro from his imprisonment. They reunite with Cobra and later Destro has a mission for Snake Eyes which involves him tracking down the son of the original Cobra Commander, Billy. Next issue will see Snake Eyes rival Storm Shadow enter the fray. The issue had twenty pages of story with five pages devoted to Destro’s childhood which need not be relevant to the main story. Overall it was a simple short plot kicking off the series and worthy of a B rating.

Transformers: Punishment begins with Decepticons being murdered as Starscream investigates. Optimus Prime returns to Cybertron and discovers the murders. As more murders occur Optimus Prime suspects the Firecons are involved so the Transformers go after them. After they are stopped more murders occur and this time it’s the Autobots. Now the Dinobots are targeted and Optimus Prime catches the Transformer red handed. Transformers: Punishment was marketed as a prelude to the upcoming Combiner Wars event which continues in both the Transformers #39 and the Transformers: Windblade series. Overall the issue raises more questions than answers in the end which will hopefully gets answered in Combiner Wars event. This is issue is B rated for plotting and story.

E45: Star Trek #40 Q Gambit Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

The final issue of Star Trek Q Gambit sees the Defiant pursuing the Enterprise into the wormhole as Dukat and his crew is inhibited by the Pah-Wraiths. The Pah-Wraiths are inter-dimensional species which could destroy the Q Continuum. Dukat beams Sisko, Kirk, Spock, and Q onto the Enterprise and kills Sisko. The Prophet leaves Sisko and inhibits Spock. Now Spock makes the logical choice and gives the Prophet to Q so both of them combined can destroy the Pah-Wraiths. Q sends Kirk and his crew back to his own timeline as he visits Picard in his timeline. Overall these six issues were outstanding as they brought back old faces with the new Star Trek crew.

Star Trek: The Q Gambit TPB [2014-2015]

STAR TREK: THE Q GAMBIT TPB

In the original timeline, Q visits Picard and reveals Ambassador Spock has survived and is living in an alternative timeline. Q tells him that Spock’s actions saved this timeline however has doomed the other one. He visits the alternative timeline and shows Kirk that there’s such a thing as a no-win scenario. Q takes the Enterprise to the opposite side of the Alpha Quadrant and to the future within new timeline where the space station known as Deep Space Nine in the original timeline awaits them.

The Enterprise and the crew are quickly captured by the Dominion. Kirk brought to Terok Nor and meets Gul Dukat who reveals Kirk has traveled a century into the future and the Federation surrendered to the Dominion. Kirk meets Sisko who rescues him and brings back to Earth which is ruled by the Klingon Empire. The Alpha Quadrant is divided between the Dominion and the Klingon Empire. Sisko explains to Kirk how the Klingons took over Earth. They meet with the Supreme Chancellor Worf who is later assassinated revealing the Dominion has taken over the Earth. However back on Bajor Spock and McCoy are introduced to Doctor Bashir who rescues them with the help of Qwark and Kira who are both with the resistance. Q’s motivation for bringing them into the future is still unclear however as the story progresses forward with three issues left we will find out whether this arc filled with memories is worth having.

On Earth the captured Sisko and Kirk are rescued by the Defiant while on Bajor Qwark betrays his allies to the Cardassians. Kira has an ancient tablet that could turn the tide of the war with the Dominion. The table contains two imprisoned entities from other dimensions the Par-Wraith and a Prophet. Gul Dukat takes the tablet and willingly releases the two entities. 

Star Trek #39 of the Q Gambit begins as Dukat breaks the tablet and releases the Pah-Wraith and the Last Prophet. The Pah-Wraith inhibits Dukat as the Last Prophet heads towards Kira. However Dukat kills Kira allowing the Last Prophet to inhibit Sisko. Now Dukat takes the Enterprise into the wormhole to join his brethren and return with an overwhelming force. Sisko and Kirk arrive in the Defiant and have a choice to make. Give Dukat chase into the wormhole where and be destroyed or wait for them to return with a powerful force of Pah-Wraiths to wipe them all out. Q arrives to inform Kirk that depending on his decision he and the entire Q Continuum will cease to exist. This is a daring cliffhanger ending leading into the final issue of the story arc.

E40: Batman Eternal #39 | SHIELD #1 | Star Trek / Planet of the Apes #1 Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

The last issue of Batman Eternal for 2014 hit stands as Batman tracks down the Riddler only to be buried in an avalanche. The Arkham Asylum villains escape with the help of Catwoman who offers them a chance to join her to rule the entire Eastern Coast. However a mysterious voice offers them a chance to use Batman Incorporated weapons to destroy Gotham.  

Mark Waid brings the characters of Agents of SHIELD to comics in the new SHIELD series. Agent Coulson and his team takes on a terrorist who has a sword made out of Uru metal. The sword was stolen from Heimdall who fell to Earth leaving other beings from other realms to enter Midgard. Coulson uses both Valkyrie and the Black Knight to take on the terrorist while he rescues Heimdall who has a black rock embedded in his chest. He brings all the heroes and the beings from other realms who arrived on Earth to him. Coulson distracts Heimdall who is inhibited by another being and uses the Vision to remove the black rock from his chest. The beings are back to their own realms as Coulson studies the black rock.

E04: G.I. Joe #1 Karven Traviss | Star Trek #37 Q Gambit Reviews [Devil Comics Entertainment]

IDW took over G.I. Joe after Devil’s Due and began publishing new G.I. Joe series in 2008. This is their fourth attempt to relaunch the franchise in six years. The first volume lasted 28 issues beginning in 2008. The second volume lasted 21 issues starting in 2011. The third volume lasted 15 issues in 2013 and was released the same year as the film sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The fourth volume begins this week with the Fall of G.I. Joe arc. Expect a new first issue of G.I. Joe when the third sequel of the film hits theaters in 2016.

Star Wars novelist and English writer Karen Traviss begins the Fall of G.I. Joe with her first issue which is heavily layered in dialogue than action for a G.I. Joe comic. Truthfully its refreshing considering most comics from the Big Two could be read under three minutes. The US Government thinks Cobra is back in the back after renouncing violence and not the G.I. Joe is obsolete.  The story takes place several years after the last series.

Star Trek: Khan TPB [2013-2014]

   

STAR TREK: KHAN TRADE PAPERBACK

Following Star Trek Into Darkness, the trial of Kahn begins as he claims innocent and his story begins in 1971 Bombay. He is taken and reeducated and his DNA reorganized to become a superior being. Khan kills and escapes the facility that raised him and unites with the rest of his enginnered peers to rule the world. The Eugenics War begins with two nuclear detonations on North America and ends with the Reign of Khan. The humans later developed a genetic weapon to stop Khan and his people. Khan retreated into space on the Botany Bay.

Khan awakens as John Harrison unaware of who he once was under Admiral Marcus of Section 31. Marcus changes his physical identity and he destroys the Klingon mining colony Praxxis. After the assault, Khan discovers his body and mind are altered and decide to take the fight to Earth. After the assault, Khan discovers his body and mind are altered and decide to take the fight to Earth to take revenge. Khan is sentenced following After Darkness to be with his people frozen in time.

Star Trek: The Khitomer Conflict TPB [2013]

   

STAR TREK: THE KHITOMER CONFLICT TRADE PAPERBACK

Following Star Trek Into Darkness, Section 31 has been laying the groundwork between the war between the Romulans and the Klingons. The Romulans launch an attack against the Klingons on Khitomer. Captain Kirk brings Sulu’s sister Yuki onboard for their 5-Year Mission as they receive a distress call from the Klingons. The weapons the Romulans are using against the Klingons are from Section 31.

The Enterprise head to Khitomer as Captain Kirk beams down as the Klingons arrive in Narada ships. Kirk is captured by the Klingons while Commander Spock retreats and regroups. The Klingon Empire has divided their fleet while Kronos is left unprotected as the Romulans and Section 31 launch their attack.

The Enterprise heads to Kronos and rescues Kirk who realizes that Section 31 is going to plant Red Matter on the Klingon Homeworld. Their efforts are stopped as they discover Sulu’s sister Yuki is a member of Section 31 as she beans down to Kronos. Yuki lost her best friend when Vulcan was destroyed and does not want Earth to suffer the same fate. She plans on using the Red Matter to destroy Kronos. Thanks to Kirk talking her out of it – the Klingon homeworld is spared.

Section 31 saves the Enterprise and destroys the Romulan fleet. Now both the Klingons and the Romulan fleets are in ruins while the Federation remains strong. Yuki returns to Section 31 as the Enterprise continues on their 5-year mission.

STAR TREK: AFTER DARKNESS TPB

Following the events of Star Trek Into Darkness, the Enterprise embarks on their 5-year mission as the Klingons prepare for war with the Federation. Spock goes through the Pon Farr and must return to New Vulcan for the mating rituals. Meanwhile something sinister lurks on Romulus involving Section 31 where they plan to unite to destroy the Klingons.

The Enterprise crew discovers Spock has joined the Sasaud which is a regressed state of a Vulcan before the Great Awakening. Meanwhile the Klingons have used the technology from the alternative timeline to build ships similar to Nero. Spock is returned back to the Enterprise after he is cured. Later Kirk encounters the Gorn who have been attacked by humans.

Film Review: Star Trek: Into Darkness [2013]

      

Director J.J. Abrams directs Star Trek: Into Darkness before he begins to switch to another sci-fi franchise Star Wars Episode VII in 2015. Spoilers are revealed through out this review. Star Trek 3 is expected to arrive in 2016 just in time for the 50th Anniversary of the Star Trek series.

John Harrison attacks Starfleet killing Admiral Christopher Pike and flees to the Klingon home world of Kronos. Captain James T. Kirk wants to go after Harrison who is a former Section 31 agent spying on the Klingons. Admiral Marcus allows Kirk to undergo a mission to Kronos with Dr. Carol Marcus who is his daughter of to capture Harrison and allow him to face justice.

After being forced to land and captured of the Klingons, Harrison comes to their rescue and asks for how many torpedoes on their ships which Kirk replies “72.” Harrison surrenders to Kirk and discovers the torpedoes contain a frozen human who is 300 years-old. Meanwhile Montgomery Scott inspects the coordinates on Jupiter that Harrison gave to Kirk

Harrison reveals his name is Khan was used by Starfleet to bring a war between the Klingons and Starfleet. Admiral Marcus intercepts the Enterprise and wants to take Khan back. Kirk sets a course for Earth while Admiral Marcus pursues him and fires on the Enterprise. Carol speaks to her father who prompting transports her to his ship. Kirk surrenders himself and asks for his crew to be spared. As Marcus begins to fire, Montgomery Scott who has sneaked onboard Marcus’ ship temporary disables the weapon systems.

Both Kirk and Khan team up and space jumps to Marcus’ ship with the help of Montgomery Scott. Khan, Kirk, and Scott seize the bridge with Carol Marcus. Khan kills Admiral Marcus and wants to exchange Kirk for his crew. The original Spock (Leonard Nimoy) appears and reveals who Khan was in his timeline.

Spock surrenders Khan’s crew who are in torpedo tubes and Khan beams Kirk, Carol, and Scott back to the Enterprise. Khan believes the Enterprise should go down with her captain. The final battle reminds us that this is a different timeline from the original and stays true to the original. An excellent Star Trek film reminding us through the darkness there is always hope.

Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness TPB [2013]

STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS TPB

The Enterprise crew investigates the planet Phaedus IV that has technology beyond their current capabilities. The crew crash lands on the planet and is surrounded by the alien inhabitants who were given technology by Captain Robert April the former Captain of the Enterprise.

Captain Kirk discovers Captain Robert April broke the Prime Directive and helped the inhabitants of the planet Phaedus IV. Kirk’s crew is captured by the inhabitants below and Spock sneaks out to rescue them. Meanwhile in space the Enterprise encounters a smuggler called Mudd. Until Star Trek: Into the Darkness premieres then this series has very little to do except introduce the Klingons and its upcoming war with the Federation.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

- Spock rescues the crew and Lieutenant Uhura lands with Mudd on the planet

- Kirk, April, and the rest of the crew return back to the Enterprise

- The Klingons have been supplying arms to the inhabitants of Phaedus

The Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Best of Both Worlds introduce Locutus who is Captain Picard assimilated as a Borg. Now 500 years after the final Federation world fell, Locutus feels perfection has not been achieved and purpose was taken away. Locutus reassembles Data to kill the Borg Queen.

In the present a Borg invasion is imminent however they have come in peace and seek the former Locutus. The Borg has experimented with inter-dimensional travel with severe consequences as Species 1881 has followed them back to this universe. Species 1881 want perfect Chaos compared to the Borg who was looking for perfection. Borg wants the Federation to work together with their ambassador, Seven of Nine. 

Seven of Nine was asked to volunteer as an inside man with a filter so she will be able to maintain her individuality and still be connected to the Borg. Starfleet and the Borg combine forces to intercept Species 1881 and beam a hazard team with Wolf and Vulcan Commandos on board on of their ships. They find out that the beings have been engineered by the Borg. Picard realizes it’s a trap and Seven of Nine loses control of the filter.

In the future Seven of Nine is the Borg Queen’s protective sentinel which is defeated by both Locutus and Data. Both Data and Locutus defeat the Queen however Data is sent back to alter the past to save Picard in the present. Data asks Picard to become Locutus once again so the Borg Queen will accept the virus within Picard. The plan works and thousands of Borg are freed however Seven of Nine sacrifices herself to save them.

The perspective of the crew is told from a Redshirt on board the Enterprise. Keenser the being who hangs out with Scotty met George Kirk during the first contact between his planet and Starfleet. Keenser graduated Starfleet after the Starfleet ship Kelvin was destroyed. He is able to fit into the smallest shafts within the Enterprise to make repairs.

Scotty explains alternative timelines to McCoy. In the Mirror Universe, the Terran Empire has captured the Klingon homeworld. Commander Kirk heads to a Klingon prison planet and kills Nero while commanding his ship. Kirk takes the crew of the Enterprise and leaves Captain Spock to defend for himself. Kirk fires and destroys the Enterprise and heads to Vulcan. 

Before he heads to Vulcan, Kirk captures the Jellyfish which is the ship Spock Prime is on. Kirk plans on destroying Vulcan however he is betrayed by the newly anointed Captain Uhura. She managed to save the Mirror Spock before the destruction of the Enterprise who stops the Kirk.

The book collects to classic Star Trek the original series episodes The Return of the Archons and The Trouble with Tribbles which are retold with a classic twist. Both stories lead into next summer’s Star Trek 2: Into the Darkness.

The Return of the Archons follows Sulu and the Enterprise to a planet where the people are descendents of a Federation starship the U.S.S. Archon. The descendents are controlled by a computer named after a rogue scientist named Cornelius Landru. Kirk and Spock teleport the machine back to the ship and free the people which draw the attention of Admiral Pike and a secret branch of Starfleet.

The second story is called The Truth about Tribbles where a Tribble is beamed to Starfleet Academy while the Enterprise deals with a Klingon Bird of Prey who warps away. They discover a planet which is the home of the Tribbles where the Klingons planted a bomb. Meanwhile both Starfleet Academy and the Enterprise are overridden by them. The crew lowers the temperature to slow their replication. All is well and Starfleet Intelligence has taken the Tribbles for further study.
