Devil Comics Review | Marvel Legacy #1 [2017]

The Avengers of One Million BC unite to fend Earth against a Celestial which later rises in the present with Loki. Robbie Reyes has visions of the past and ends up in Cape Town, South Africa until he faces Starbrand who wants something ancient to stay buried and will kill anyone to tries to unearth it. In Jotunheim Loki gathers the Frost Giants to steal something from a Shield storage facility on Midgard. The Avengers stop them however one of the Frost Giants steals the crate and ends up facing a resurrected Wolverine.

Devil Comics Review | Secret Empire [2017] Nick Spencer

Secret Empire began during the Welcome to Pleasant Hill when an older Steve Rogers is restored to his youth thanks to the living Cosmic Cube called the Kobik belonging to the Red Skull. However the Cosmic Cube rewrote the origin of Captain America by making him a Hydra Agent. Now Hydra asserts itself to take over the world while the heroes are divided by an invasion by the Chitauri, Graviton attacking in New York, and Hydra forces in Russia. 

While the remaining heroes are hidden away at a base outside of Vegas, Steve Rogers executes Rick Jones for relaying information to the heroes while laying waste to Vegas. However the remaining heroes receives the message that Captain America was changed by the Cosmic Cube. They have to unite the shards to return Steve Rogers back to normal. 

Both sides needs to tangle with Ultron to get the first shard. Iron Man claims the first two shards while Captain America is on his tail with a resurrected Bruce Banner. Emma Frost has another shard to rule the mutant nation of New Tian and Black Panther and Wakanda has another shard. 

Captain America regains the shards from the Underground at the cost of Madame Hydra who sacrificed her life. Black Widow goes for the kill as Miles Morales faces Steve Rogers face-to-face. Rogers kills the Black Widow as Morales beats him however stops short from killing him. Morales is arrested and Sam Wilson takes up Captain America's shield. Sam builds up the resistance while Captain America captures the Black Panther and the residents of New Tian. However the mutants rebelled and Black Panther is saved by the Winter Soldier. Now the heroes face off against Captain Hydra until he is stopped by Kobik who brings back the original untainted Steve Rogers. Captain America returns and stops Hydra from using the Cosmic Cube to rewrite the world.  

Steve Rogers confronts Hydra Cap in prison on his choices and consequences. Hydra Cap believes in the reality which was created for him by Kobik. Now Rogers deals with the aftermath of distrust which was created by Captain Hydra.

DC Comics begins its July Solicitations with Dark Days: The Casting follows The Forge in June leading to August’s Dark Nights: Metal and its spin-off Dark Matter. DC Comics’ Dark Matter which is an artist-centric approach series drawn by today’s best artists including Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and John Romita Jr. who also drawn The Forge and The Casting. The first appearance of the characters in Dark Matter could be in both the Forge and the Casting.

Marvel Comics begins its July Solicitations with Secret Empire while also promoting the 10 issue maxi series Generations for August and September. Clearly DC has a better publishing strategy because it focuses on new ideas rather than consolidating old ones. However Marvel is releasing Marvel Legacy #1 one shot similar to DC Rebirth #1 where some of the titles will return to their original numbering.

Marvel Comics Pull List: Secret Empire Last mega event till 2019.

In 2016 IDW Publishing released Revolution which brought various Hasbro properties together including Transformers, G.I Joe, and MASK. They are competing with both DC and Marvel which also have shared universes. The purpose of a shared universe is basically multiplying and maximize sales towards the target audience. One reader would buy two books within a shared universe to complete the story rather than one.

After last year’s DC Rebirth, Marvel Comics may also be bringing legacy back to their characters in 2017. In April Eddie Brock will return as Venom as the series celebrates its #150 issue in May. The first issue came in 1993 with Venom: Lethal Protector.

Following Spider-Man: The Clone Conspiracy, Peter David and Mark Bagley take on Ben Reilly as the Scarlet Spider and return the clone back to his original costume by the end of the first arc.

In May Marvel brings Secret Empire #1 which kicked off with a zero issue in April. The series promises to be the final political social commentary for the foreseeable future as Marvel plans on bringing legacy and heroism back to the forefront in September following the conclusion of the series. Last year Marvel released Civil War II which dealt with profiling in the Marvel Universe using an Inhuman to predict crimes.

While Marvel plans to bring legacy and heroism back, they are also teaming up with Archie to bring comic digest collections. The digest will ship six times a year with four in 2017. Marvel is planning on reaching and exposing themselves to a new audience with more digestible collections instead of the monthly series or trades which could be harder to collect and follow.

Marvel Comics also released a teaser by Alex Ross showcasing the classic Marvel heroes and their inspired counterparts titled Generations. Marvel has announced by the Fall of 2017, the classic Marvel Universe will be back in full swing with Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and Odinson back as Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, respectively.

Whether bringing legacy back to the Marvel Universe will help sales depends on the story associated with it. DC Rebirth brought the Watchmen into the DC Universe which propelled the story forward until 2018 when everything will come together. Marvel seems to building a stronger foundation as the Avengers movies in 2018 and 2019 concludes the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Last year comic book stores ordered 0.3% more in comics and graphic novels than in 2015. Overall there was a 1% increase in comics or a million more comics (99 million in total according to Diamond) and 2.1% increase in graphic novels.  

Devil Comics Review | Captain America: Steve Rogers [2016] Hail Hydra!

Following Avengers Standoff, Steve Rogers returns as Captain America thanks to Kobik who is a living Cosmic Cube. The first issue of Captain America revealed he is an Agent of Hydra. The second issue reveals how Steve Rogers turned into one. The story begins twenty years ago in Captain America #448 when writer Mark Waid wrote the series. Captain America was trapped inside of the Cosmic Cube and with the help of Bucky broke free to take down the Red Skull. While taking him down the Cosmic Cube shattered and was experimented by SHIELD. One of those fragments was Kobik who sought her original owner the Red Skull. Kobik reveals to the Red Skull she is loyal and can turn people to believe they are with Hydra. The Red Skull uses Kobik during Avengers Standoff to transform Captain America into an Agent of Hydra. 

Steve Rogers takes on Baron Zemo and throws Jack Flag out of the plane so he can steer it into a building with Dr. Erik Selvig and Zemo inside. However Selvig has survived the crash and is secretly working with Rogers to find Kobik and to kill the Red Skull for the sake of Hydra. However during Civil War II, Steve discovers his own death at the hands of the Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales. Steve decides his death will be for the glory of Hydra.
