Film Review: Battleship [2012]

The movie is based on the Hasbro board game of the same name. Everyone was skeptical when the premise first announced. The Navy tackles aliens at sea. A ridiculous premise brought by an excellent execution by Hancock director Peter Berg. The movie stars Taylor Kitsch who recently starred in Disney’s John Carter flop takes charge of the Navy after his brother dies during the initial alien attack. The first twenty minutes is a drag as it sets up Taylor’s character as a flawed, impulsive officer who is ready to be kicked out of the Navy. Afterwards the movie kicks into high gear when the aliens arrive on Earth ready to use their communication satellites to contact the rest of their fleet.

The people face an impossible position against the aliens until a weakness is found and exploited. The movie brings a Hunt for Red October feel as it plays off the premise of the board game by Hasbro. The movie also stars Liam Neeson who is coming off taking on wolves in the Grey and ready to take on the Batman in the upcoming Dark Knight Rises. One of the best action films this year prior to the upcoming Avengers film in May.
