Batman: Prey TPB [1993]

Set during the Batman: Year One timeframe however presented during the early 1990s, the story is a foundation for the upcoming 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises. The film also incorporates events from Batman: Knightfall where the villain Bane breaks Batman. The movie takes place eight years after the events of The Dark Knight towards the end of Batman’s career.

Batman: Prey begins as Batman ruins a drug sting set up by Gotham P.D. As psychiatrist Dr. Hugo Strange analyzes Batman on live television, the Mayor of Gotham announces the formation of a vigilante task force headed by Captain James Gordon to take down Batman. Batman battles both criminals and the police without the Batmobile.

Bruce gets an invitation to Mayor’s dinner party with Dr. Hugo Strange. Gordon creates the Bat-Signal who attracts the attention of Sgt. Max Cort the second-in-command of the vigilante taskforce. Cort goes to Strange who has plans to bring both Gordon and Batman down. Strange hypnotizes him to be the Night-Scourge.

Batman defeats the Night-Scourge however Strange dresses Max Cort up in a fake Batman costume and kidnaps the Mayor’s daughter Catherine. The Gotham PD have shoot to kill orders on Batman while Strange taunts the kidnapped Catherine wearing the fake Batman suit.

Batman goes to Strange’s apartment who is ready for him with a hallucinogen. Strange discovers it was Batman’s parents that were lost which irreverently created him and wants the Gotham police files going back twenty years. The following morning Bruce heads back home to Wayne Manor to find Alfred unconscious on the floor. Strange taunts Bruce with false recorded voices of his parents.

Batman finishes the Batmobile and heads back to Strange’s apartment to confront him once and for all. Gordon arrives and rescues the Mayor’s daughter while Strange escapes. Batman takes on Night-Scourge who dies in a hail of gunfire by Gotham PD.

Batman: Terror is by the same writing and art team of writer Doug Moench and artist Paul Gulacy (Batman: Prey). After Batman stops an arms deal from completing, he meets with Gordon at a murder scene where the criminal wanted to frame him. Dr. Hugo Strange disguises himself to infiltrate Arkham Asylum as a psychiatrist to visit Jonathan Crane AKA the Scarecrow. Strange seduces Crane to become the master of fear against Batman who walks him out of Arkham Asylum.  

Batman chases after Catwoman while the Scarecrow betrays Strange who falls through the wooden hole on the floor and impaled by a weather vane. Scarecrow kidnaps Catwoman and takes pictures of her a Selina Kyle to blackmail her.

Scarecrow goes after the bullies who tormented him as Jonathan Crane. Captain James Gordon and Batman lure Catwoman who gives them a homing device to locate the Scarecrow. When Batman arrives the Scarecrow is ready and waiting however fights back, rescues the victims, and finally defeats the Scarecrow with a little help from Catwoman.
