Film Review: Avengers [2012]

The director and writer of the Avengers Joss Whedon assembles an ensemble cast from previous Marvel movies to carry out the plan set in 2006 by Marvel Studios. Beginning with Marvel Studios first film Iron Man, the closing credits introduces Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) speaking with Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) about the Avengers Initiative. After Iron Man premiered the Incredible Hulk followed bringing Tony Stark to the forefront at the end of the film. The ending of Iron Man 2 in 2010 showcased Thor’s hammer at the end leading to Thor coming to Earth in 2011. The Thor ended with his half-brother Loki coming to Earth and the power source of the Cosmic Cube is revealed. Following the Thor film in 2011, Captain America: The First Avenger followed introducing the Red Skull and properly introducing the Cosmic Cube. The Red Skull uses the Cosmic Cube and is lost within the World Tree. The Red Skull was rumored to be the secret villain within the Avengers working with Loki however it is revealed to be Thanos as the Infinity Gauntlet was shown within the Thor film.

There were talks of a Justice League movie however assembling them would be difficult because each character is an icon. It’s easy to put Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor in a room because it is easy to relate to them. Pepper Potts will be the only supporting character from the other films compared to Thor and Captain America. Whedon wanted to create a type of isolation when they gathered themselves to form the Avengers.
